Whole School Activities

Physical Education

In preparation for the Cross Country and Athletics carnivals later this term, we have started training during our Physical Education lessons. On Mondays we are training for Cross Country, while on Wednesday and Thursday we are practicing our long jump, high jump and shot put skills. We are encouraging our students as always to make their best efforts however we are mindful of the hot weather and are having frequent breaks to cool ourselves down.

Lower Division

Lower Division have had a busy start to the year, heading straight in to our first English unit on Context and also our Mathematics unit looking at sorting groups by their attributes. Our class enjoyed using the Book Creator app to create our own multimodal texts where we designed a page to be added to the text "Under the Southern Cross".

We used shapes and blocks to demonstrate how we sort groups and this was enjoyed by all students. Lower Division has also been working on recognising and creating our own patterns which has been lots of fun and very productive.

Upper Division

Visual Arts | I like my suitcase!

Students viewed the YouTube clip 'I like my suitcase,' and used this as a reference to create a piece of artwork. Students focused on the elements of line, shape and space to creatively plan their compositions.

Senior's Day Letter Writing

Today we will be attending Senior's Day at McMaugh Gardens. Our students are invited to a morning tea where we will spend some time with the residents. Last week we started writing a letter, with particular attention to structure. We will hand-deliver our letters and wish all senior's a lovely day!

Stage 3

In English we have been enjoying a unit of work on our mentor text 'Storm Boy' by Colin Thiele, studying common narrative conventions and patterns, and how to use the author's techniques to enhance our own writing. We recently experimented after a deep-dive into personification, jointly constructing the following written description on one of our newly cleared garden beds which looked quite scenic that morning:

Dressed in her finest and groomed to perfection, meeting those with a welcome where there once was sound of danger; the illusive garden of Rocky River Public School. With sunlight swimming through the gaps in the trees, the grass swaying as the warm wind blow dries its hair. No more are the days where one would squeeze through the trees, with penny lizards tussling through the crunching bed of dry leaves. Welcome to the promise land of Rocky River.

In Mathematics, we've explored some big ideas, including"The number system extends infinitely to very large and very small numbers".We've had some opportunity to get hands on with place value and our manipulation of numbers, including those with decimals, as we tested our reflexes in a stopwatch challenge. It is safe to say we have some potential certified timekeepers for sporting events who were able to stop the watch on 00:03.00 seconds, with not a single tenth or hundredth of a second before or after. We used this data to explore place value in a variety of ways.
