English

This term we have been studying the novel War Horse in Literacy. Through this they have developed their reading comprehension skills, explored figurative language, learned new vocabulary words and deepened their understanding of World War One and the experience of soldiers and animals in the war.

Books 5/6C have been enjoying this term.
Books 5/6C have been enjoying this term.

I like it because the author gives the horse so much personality and because it shows the brutal truth of war – Archie Plathe

I like it because of how much description there is, there’s always something going on – Lexi Osborne

I love War Horse because it informs you about war and the love of soldiers and their majestic friends, horses– Alex Smith

Writing Prompt- A Journey into the Unknown!

Students created a narrative from the perspective of an animal on a journey. From a Pug being locked out it's house, to a Capybara on a whimsical adventure, the story that were created certainly impressed the 5/6 Teachers.

Maths

This term we have learnt about decimals and powers of 10, positive and negative numbers, and angles.

We linked positive and negative numbers to designing skyscrapers and their basements, using a ratio of 6m above ground to 1m below ground. The structures were designed with a scale of 1cm = 20.5m.

Students have been learning about Angles, with a bit of a footy twist. Students have been measuring and identifying different types of Angles, and students have analysed the angles of AFL goal kickers. Students put their own goal kicking ability to the test, collecting data on different goal kicking angles and analysing the success rate of different angles.

Anti Vaping/ Police Visit

On March 19th, our 5/6 students took part in the Bendigo Community Health Services (BCHS) Anti-Vaping education sessions. These sessions shared the dangers of vaping and exposed how tobacco companies strategically market their products to appeal to young people. Through open discussions and valuable insights, students gained a deeper understanding of the risks associated with vaping and the tactics used to influence their choices.

"Thank you BCHS for coming to educate us on the harm of vaping. We learnt that vapes are a horrible way to live your life and that they are full of chemicals that are bad for your health." - Rylie

"We learned what vapes look like and what they can do to your body. We also found out what vapes contain, and what nicotine is. I'm grateful for BCHS teaching us about vaping." - Flynn

"I learnt how important it is not to vape. I learnt about the outcomes of vaping on your health and the bad stuff it can do to your body, like your lungs." - Lucy

'If you vape you will regret it." - Apajok

On March 21st, we welcomed a familiar face to speak with our Year 5/6 students about Youth Crime. This session covered topics including; cyberbullying, committing crimes due to manipulation or peer pressure, hate crimes, criminal records, and public safety. Students engaged in meaningful discussions, gaining awareness of the consequences of their actions and the importance of making responsible decisions.

These visits from the Bendigo Police and BCHS play a vital role in early intervention and education. By equipping our students with the knowledge and awareness to navigate these challenges, we empower them to make informed, confident, and responsible choices in their daily lives. Students had the opportunity to engage with local police officers including our former EPS teacher Mr Mann, students asked a variety of different questions, many students were thankful for the knowledge the police officers were able to impart on our current Grade 5/6 students.

Harmony Day

During week 8 Epsom Primary School students celebrated Harmony Week. In light of Harmony Day, students and staff were encouraged to wear Orange! Harmony Day is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds.

It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. While Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s rich cultural diversity, it is also important to focus on the urgency of combatting racism wherever and whenever it arises.
