Inside Classrooms

Cohort and Specialist Updates

Students of the week

TBC

Foundation:

The Foundation students have settled into school routines and begun learning their letters and sounds.  Supporting them to learn has been the calm corners set up in each classroom and lessons on the Zones of Regulation.  In Mathematics students have been learning to recognise patterns, continue a pattern and to make a pattern with colours and objects.

Overall, it has been a busy start to the year of learning.

Year 1/2:

It has been a fantastic start to the year so far, with all students settling into school routines very well.

For this term in Inquiry, Year 1 and 2 students will be investigating the big idea of ‘Our Local Community’.

During the unit, students will identify the communities they belong to, such as class, school, families and culture. They will explore the similarities and differences between their own and other communities, how individuals participate in and contribute to their community. Over the term students will continue to discuss the themes of belonging, inclusion, cooperation, respect and acceptance through both Inquiry and Literacy when reading and discussing a range of rich texts.

Year 3/4:

Grade 3/4 Newsletter Update – Term 1, 2025

Welcome to an exciting new year in Grade 3/4! The first two weeks have been all about Learning to Learn—establishing strong foundations for a successful year ahead.

Students have been actively involved in setting up their classrooms, creating a welcoming and organised learning environment. Together, we have explored our classroom expectations, focusing on respect, responsibility, and teamwork to ensure a positive space for everyone.

Week 3, we have dived into our learning across key subjects:

🔢 Mathematics – Exploring place value, understanding numbers, and developing confidence in mathematical thinking.

📖 Reading – Making connections between texts and our own experiences, and using prediction and inference to deepen comprehension.

Writing – Identifying nouns and different sentence types to build strong, structured writing.

🌏 Knowledge Unit – Exploring communities and the role they play in our lives, as well as learning about Australia’s neighbouring countries, their cultures, and connections to our own.

As we move into Weeks 3 and 4, we begin our formal content teaching, building on these foundations to explore new concepts and skills across all learning areas. It has been a fantastic start to the year, and we look forward to all the exciting learning ahead!

Warm regards,

3/4 Team.

Year 5/6:

The 5/6 cohort are ready for an exciting and busy Term 1. The students have settled in well and are eager to dive into their learning. Our Inquiry topic this term is Community, where students will explore democracy and citizenship. Through engaging discussions and activities, they will gain a deeper understanding of how communities function and the role they play as active citizens.

In Writing, students will focus on persuasive texts as they prepare for NAPLAN writing. They will learn how to structure arguments, use persuasive language, and strengthen their ability to express opinions effectively.

It will also be a term full of sport, with two upcoming Gala Summer Sport Days. These will be fantastic opportunities for students to participate in team sports, develop their skills, and enjoy some healthy competition.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead, filled with learning, growth, and exciting opportunities.

                              Specialist- Auslan

At APS, we are very excited to introduce Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to our specialist program.

All students will be participating in a weekly lesson where they will learn frequently used Auslan signs, the Auslan alphabet and numbers. We will be practicing communicating by only using our hands and facial expressions! This week we have been focusing on learning the Auslan alphabet and some other common signs such as hello, good, Auslan, quiet and voices off!
