Grade 3 and 4

English
The year is underway and we have set our English expectations and routines. We are starting to explore narratives and persuasive texts using various reading and writing strategies: making connections, summarising and predicting. To support our learning, all three classes have started a new shared reading book called 'The One and Only Ivan'. The One and Only Ivan tells the remarkable true story of Ivan, a gorilla kept in captivity at a shopping mall. This heartwarming tale explores friendship, freedom, and the power of hope, reminding readers of the beauty of compassion and the importance of standing up for what is right. We are looking forward to exploring these themes of our class novel as the term progresses using our reading and writing strategies.
Mathematics
The exploring has begun. We are seeing numbers EVERYWHERE! With our topic of place value, the Grade 3 students are exploring, modeling and ordering numbers up to 10,000. The Grade 4 students are busy bees working with the other side of the decimal point, looking at tenths and hundredths and converting to fractions. With the use of hands-on materials, the students are developing confidence in representing these numbers.
The Resilience Project
In Grades 3 and 4 we are highly engaged in The Resilience Project. Students are developing a deeper understanding of the key pillars that underpin the project - Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) along with Emotional Literacy. The Resilience Project is an educational program through storytelling and humour to have open conversations about wellbeing and teach positive mental health strategies to help people become happier and more resilient. It has been a wonderful start to the program and the students are showing GEM daily. If you have heard 'DIS' they have permission to pronounce this as dis. We learnt gratitude through a boy in India who showed gratitude everywhere around him by saying 'DIS!' to a lot of things. The students are encouraged to find 'DIS' everywhere around them and share that with their peers, teachers and families. We hope the families enjoyed learning more at The Resilience Project at Tuesday night's session.
Meet the Teacher BBQ
Thank you to everyone who attended our Meet the Teacher BBQ on Tuesday afternoon. It was wonderful to chat and enjoy a nice afternoon together. We have an amazing school community and love the support that families give us. We look forward to working with you this year. A big thank you to TheirCare for providing us with a BBQ and thank you to Charlotte, Sophie, Olivia (Mrs Dibb's daughters) and Mrs Bailey for the face paint!
