Garden

Our school garden

We are very lucky to have raised garden beds and fruit trees at St Anthony’s. Gardening is part of our curriculum and all students are involved in gardening activities, from planting to eating the produce. We grow everything organically - no chemicals are used at all.

Harvest

Two main activities in the garden are watering and harvesting our summer produce: tomatoes, capsicums, zucchini, last of the green beans, basil and figs. We are talking about how to preserve the fruit and vegetables for winter and how to save seeds for the next season.

So far we have made fig jam, picked and dried lemon verbena leaves for tea, made basil pesto, frozen cooked veggies and plan to make tomato sauce and herb salts.

Our tomatoes this year are very prolific, especially the kumato cherry variety. Students have eaten tray after tray of tomatoes. Figs and red capsicums were also popular.

We have saved plenty of tomato and capsicum seeds to raise our own seedlings for spring. It’s very easy, just ask your children.

Gardening Gloves

Gardening gloves are essential whenever we are planting, collecting leaves, etc. The gloves should fit your child's hands and be clearly labeled. The best ones are those with rubber on the palms and fingers with the stretch fabric on the outside (see below). They are waterproof, easy to put on and wash as well.

Each student should have brought a pair to school. If you haven’t done so, please send a pair of gardening gloves to school.

Thank you.
