Nutritious Lunch Boxes
From The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne:
The five food groups to remember when preparing a nutritious lunch:
Planning school lunches can sometimes become one of the hardest tasks on the to-do list – balancing foods your child enjoys with limited time to prepare complex dishes and competing with treats at the school canteen.
As long as your child’s lunch box contains a combination of food that includes cereals and grains, vegetables, fruit, dairy (or alternatives) and meat (or alternatives), you’re helping to set them up for healthy growth and development.
There could even be multiple food groups within the same dish, like a curry, sandwich or stir fry.
Involving your child in food shopping, cooking and packing their own lunch box can also help encourage them to try new things and learn about nutrition.
For hydration, water is the best choice. Fruit juice, soft drink, sports drinks and energy drinks contain a lot of sugar and are not needed.
