Senior and Intermediate Basketball Teams Show Strength at Wellington Round

The Senior Girls had a thrilling four-quarter battle against Kurnai College, with a nail-biting finish. The Maffra girls came out strong, establishing an 8-point lead by halftime. However, Kurnai fought back in the final quarter to level the scores. In a tense finish, Maffra held on to secure a narrow 2-point victory, 33–31.Bella Hunt was outstanding, leading the scoring with 17 points through excellent ball handling and shooting. Milla Oldham also contributed well with 7 points. In the final quarter, Lara Dowsett played a key defensive role, successfully tagging a top Kurnai player and creating multiple turnovers through her intense pressure.The Senior Girls now advance to the Gippsland Round.

The Intermediate Girls finished with one win for the day, defeating Kurnai 24–6 in a dominant team performance where all players contributed to the scoreboard. Maddie Winter top-scored for the team. Despite their efforts, the girls were outmatched by Catholic College and Lavalla, with Lavalla progressing to the next round.

The Intermediate Boys showed strong determination throughout the day but were unable to secure a win. Lavalla, supported by key Australian player Will Hamilton, proved too strong and progressed through to the next stage.

The Senior Boys opened their campaign with a close loss to Kurnai, 27–35, who ultimately topped the Wellington Round. Missed early opportunities proved costly in this tight contest.In their second game, the boys bounced back with a commanding 34–23 win over Traralgon College. Tom Buchanan delivered a shooting masterclass, landing six 3-pointers in the first half alone.The third match saw the boys fall to a strong SEDA team, 34–19, with Buchanan again contributing significantly, scoring 12 of the team’s 19 points.They closed the day with a gritty 33–27 win over Sale College, featuring strong defence from Vinnie Williamson and Kev Rondon, and key baskets from Tom Buchanan, Jahvis Fitt, and Blake Lindrea.
