Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,
What a great start we have had to Term 3. It appears that there was lots of travel, celebrations and excitement over the holidays and we do hope you all had a great break.
What's happened in 3/4 this week?
English
This week we’ve dived straight back into our Structured Literacy learning. We’ve continued with our learning of Morphology, with a focus on silent letters and their purpose, and have revised some of the Suffixes that we explored last term. Our Grammar focus has also continued, revising our knowledge on what makes a ‘clause’, what a ‘subordinating conjunction’ is and what ‘adverbials or adverbial phrases’ look like.
Furthermore we’ve started a new text study, Storm Boy, that will assist us throughout our term learning. This will see us practicing our choral reading, paired fluency and individual reading.
Maths
This term we begin our Multiplicative Thinking unit, with a combined focus on Multiplication & Division. Our first week has been spent exploring the questions ‘What is Multiplication & Division?’, and completing our Multiplication & Division Pre-testing.
We set up our TimesTables Accounts, and the students have started practicing, learning and recalling their multiplication facts.
Inquiry
This term our Inquiry program is split into two components from the Design and Technology learning area of the Victorian Curriculum. For the first 5 weeks of term 3, our Inquiry title is: From Farm to Fashion… From Farm to Plate… How are food and fibre products made and produced? We will be answering the following key Inquiry questions:
- How are foods and fibres made and produced on farms?
- What technologies, materials, systems, tools and equipment are used to produce food and fibre?
- What are the regions in Australia and Asia where major food or fibre, plants and animals are grown or bred?
- How does climate and soil conditions affect plant and animal production and the availability of food?
- What food preparation techniques are used in modern and traditional societies.
- What are the benefits of technologies that promote health and food safety, ensuring a wide variety of food is available for healthy eating?
- What are food product labels?
- How does the information provided on food packaging contribute to healthy eating?
We will conclude this topic with an excursion to Edendale Farm (details on compass shortly). This excursion will also assist to introduce the second component of the term where we will be designing and creating animal/bug houses.
This week in our Inquiry lessons we look at how foods and fibres are produced on farms, how food and fibre products are made and what technologies, materials, systems, tools and equipment are used to produce food and fibre.
Student Recognition Award
The students in 3/4 were given the opportunity to design a Digital based Student Recognition Award Certificate over the Term 2-3 Holiday break. Each individual class will vote on two of their favourite awards, with the two making their way to our final 12 across the 3/4 Level. Each student will get an opportunity to put in a vote during our 3/4 Assembly next Friday.
We look forward to announcing our winner soon!
Specialist Classes
Specialist class timetables have been finalised and there have been a few changes for each grade. Look out for your class’ individual email on Friday for a clear timetable.
Friendology/Wellbeing
This week in Friendology we continued to discuss the difference between a friendship fire and man on purpose. We explored ways to deal with these and came up with some quick comebacks. Ask your child if they can explain the difference or how they would deal with these situations.
