High Potential & Gifted Education (HPGE)

Intellectual Domain- Mathematics HPGE Groups
Throughout our HPGE Mathematics groups with Ms Haley Bynon, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been diligently working to deepen their mathematical understanding and extend their problem-solving abilities. Currently, students are involved in a range of tasks and mathematical investigations that foster strong communication, reasoning, and problem-solving skills both independently and collaboratively.
Our activities encourage students to reflect on their strategies and articulate their reasoning to peers and teachers, promoting a confident use of mathematical language. There is a particular emphasis on applying mathematical knowledge to unfamiliar situations, developing effective strategies to address challenges, and persevering through complex problems. Students are learning to break down intricate tasks, experiment with multiple approaches, and thoughtfully reflect on their solutions.
We encourage our HPGE students to construct logical arguments, draw well-supported conclusions, and justify their choices. They are challenged to identify patterns, make meaningful connections, and clearly explain why particular solutions are effective.
We are extremely proud of the dedication and resilience shown by our HPGE Mathematics students and look forward to their continued growth and achievements throughout this program cycle.
Physical Domain – Strengthening Skills and Unlocking Potential
Over the coming weeks, Mr Todd Cooper will be working as part of a team to observe Year 4 and Year 5 students during PE sessions. Using a rubric aligned with the Physical Literacy Continuum, staff will be looking for high potential in four key areas:
- Movement Competencies (object control, locomotion, and coordination)
- Tactical Movement (game sense and decision-making)
- Motivation and Behavioural Skills (persistence, independence, and effort)
- Personal and Social Attributes (communication, cooperation, and inclusion)
This process is not based on performance in a specific sport, but rather on students’ capabilities in diverse, team-based physical contexts. Selected students will then be invited to take part in a small-group program in Term 3, where they will further develop their skills through targeted, challenging activities. The program also includes opportunities for self and peer reflection to build confidence and support ongoing growth.
In addition, primary students have the opportunity to be involved in our major sporting carnivals and representative team pathways.
Major Carnivals
At Edgeworth Public School, Students from Years 2-6 (8 years and older) have the opportunity to participate in the three major school carnivals: swimming, cross country and athletics held each year. These carnivals are used to select representatives that will compete against students from other schools at the Crossroads PSSA zone carnivals. Students that meet the criteria at the Zone level, then progress to the next level in the representative pathway (see below).
Zone Representative Teams
Students from Edgeworth Public School with exceptional sporting ability can nominate to attend Crossroads Zone PSSA trials, typically for Years 5 and 6 (capped at 6 students per sport). Successful students progress to Hunter Region trials, then to the NSW PSSA Championships, with the opportunity to be selected for the NSW PSSA team.
Representative sporting teams include; AFL, Basketball, Cricket, Diving, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union (boys), Rugby 7’s (girls), Softball, Tennis & Touch Football. (See representative pathway below).
Social- Emotional Domain- SRC Up and Running!
Last week, our newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC) members proudly received their badges at assembly, marking the beginning of their leadership journey. Mrs Croad and Ms Bynon held the first official SRC meeting, where students explored the purpose of the SRC and how they can play an active role in gathering and sharing student voice across the school. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these young leaders will make in the term ahead.
Creative Domain- Celebrating Creativity in the Arts
We are proud to celebrate the talents of students in the Creative Domain, who have been working with Mrs Naomi Davies to explore and express their artistic abilities. This term, four stunning artworks were selected for submission to Operation Art, a prestigious statewide initiative that showcases student creativity and supports the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Congratulations to the following students whose artworks were entered:
- Pink Butterflies by Avril M
- Orange Butterflies by Mia S
- Fairy Garden by Annalyse K and Sienna F
- Ocean by Mackenzie W
We are so proud of these students for their creativity, effort, and the joy their artwork brings to others.
