Level 2: Connect

Hello Level 2 families,

One week of swimming done, one more to go! Thank you to the parents who have been making sure all clothing items are clearly labelled. A few pieces of clothing have been mixed up while children are getting changed, and having names on everything makes it much easier to return items to their owners.

Reading and Inquiry

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are integrating geography into our reading sessions. Students have started learning about the land of Australia, our neighbours, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. We aim to understand how people live in different ways and why it’s important to care for our country and respect everyone who calls it home.

Some of the questions we have been looking into include:

*Which major ecosystems does Australia boast and what characteristics do they have?

*Where do people live in Australia?

Core Literacy

In Week 3, students explored the /ch/ digraph (as chin, orchid and chef), the suffix -sion(as in explosion), and learnt the heart words: hour, fruit and blood.

In Week 4, students explored the /ear/ digraph when it makes the /er/, /air/ and ear/ sound (as in earth, pear and hear), the suffix -ible (as in flexible), and reviewed the heart words: walk, become and island.

Looking ahead in Core Literacy:

  • Week 5: Students will be reviewing the sounds learnt so far this term.
  • Week 6: Students will explore the trigraph(which makes an /qua/ sound, as in quack), the suffix -able, and the heart words:  rhythm, rhombus and something.

Maths

In the coming fortnight, our Year 2 students will be diving deeper into addition and subtraction. We’ll be learning how to trade and rename numbers to help solve more complex problems. The children will also be reviewing important mental strategies, including the compensation strategy, bridging to 10, rounding, and renaming. These strategies help students build confidence and flexibility when working with numbers, and we look forward to seeing their problem-solving skills grow!

Visual Art- please see 'Specialist Happenings' for an exciting whole school art project.

Have a great weekend!
