Shoutout to the wonderful parents who accompanied us on our excursion to Queen Victoria Market.
We all enjoyed a wonderful and productive outing to the Queen Vic Market on Thursday. Blessed with an early touch of spring weather and supported by a large group of parents (thank you so much!), we travelled by train to Flagstaff Station, enjoyed a quick play in the park, and then walked to the market to continue our research for the SEPS Term 4 Market Day.
Thanks to the many adult helpers, we were able to explore in smaller groups this year, which made it easier to visit a variety of stalls. Students were highly engaged in gathering data for their research questions, and most traders were generous with their time and insights. Along the way, the children also put their budgeting skills into practice when deciding how to spend their own money—some opted for food, while others chose items they felt they really “needed.” The difference between Needs and Wants is something we have been discussing in class. Students should now understand that a need is essential and a want is not, despite how strong our desire is to have something.
It was a fun, engaging day for all and has given us plenty to discuss and build on as we prepare for the remainder of the term.
LITERACY
This fortnight we have been revising and applying our persuasive skills. Students have analysed slogans and adverts to understand the power of different persuasive devices. It has been highlighted that the best slogans are short, catchy, often emotive, and easy to remember. Students have used opportunities to unpack the devices of well known slogans then create their own. Students have been asked:
Moreover, students have been taught that facts and evidence may be weaved into arguments to make them more persuasive. We will continue to work on synthesising evidence into persuasive writing.
Students have also continued to use their Reading Strategies to examine The Twits by Roald Dahl. This week we have been Connectors, finding Text to Text, Text to Self, and Text to World connections. Finding connections is a valuable way to deepen understandings of a text. We encourage our students to engage in conversations with their peers and families about texts they have read.
MATHS
This week our students have been developing further their understanding of Angles. We have looked at Complementary angles, when 2 angles add up to 90 degrees, Supplementary Angles, when angles add up to 180 degrees, angle categories of Acute, Obtuse, Reflex, Straight and Revolution. The students have also studies opposite angles and worked out missing angles from what they already know. They have also been using protractors to measure and create different angles.
😂 Why was the obtuse angle always so sad? Because it was never right!
Respectful Relationships
As communicated in our email last week, the students have commenced our program about respectful relationships. Discussions at home this week should be about:
Session 1: Words Matter
1. What did I learn in this session?
2. Did anything surprise me or make me think differently?
3. How might I use this learning in real life?
4. What would I like help with or learn more about?
5. Is there anything I would like my teacher to know about how I felt during this session?
Session 2: Respect vs Power
1. What did I learn in this session?
2. Did anything surprise me or make me think differently?
3. How might I use this learning in real life?
4. What would I like help with or learn more about?
5. Is there anything I would like my teacher to know about how I felt during this session?
KINECT 2 DANCE
Our rehearsals for A Night at the Museum have been super impressive. We are very excited to watch it all come together. K2D is also helping to prepare our Graduation. A friendly reminder that tickets for the show go on sale on Monday 18th August. Costume information will be also be shared next week. Thanks, in advance, for your support.
