Homework

Term 3, 2025 - Level 3

Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 3, 2025 saw the Level 3 students complete their two weeks of swimming. The children coped with this routine very well but were quite tired by the end of the two weeks. We have now settled back into the normal routine of teaching and learning.

The dance lessons are being held each Monday morning and the children are now learning two dances! These dances will be performed at the SEPS school performance in Week 9 of Term 3. As the weeks progress, it will be important for the children to practise these dance routines so we (L3 teachers) have recorded the dance teacher performing both dances.

Literacy

In Literacy we have commenced learning about the Greek Etymology of words and numbers. We have been learning about the Greek word 'mon' which means oneWe explored how this word forms other words by adding a connecting vowel and suffixes. For example, mon + o + poly = monopoly and mon + arch = monarch and mon + o + rail = monorail. There are many other words which we formed using 'mon' as the base word and adding various suffixes.

monorail = transport that runs on one rail (unlike a train which has two): literally one rail

monopoly = the idea of one company that owns or controls LOTS of things (like Google): literally, ‘one owning many’.

The students have just started to learn about the Greek words Di (two/ split into two); Tri (three); Penta (five). Many different words are formed from these base words and some examples are division, dilemma, triangle, pentagon.

We are also revising Information Reports and spending a considerable amount of time exploring the specific language being used in Information texts. In the coming weeks, the students will be completing their own Information Report on a Season (either Winter or Summer) using specific factual language, headings, paragraphs and drawings.

During the reading component of Literacy, the students are reading different weekly celebrations about topics such as Diwali, St Patrick's Day, Eid Al-Adha, Ramadan, Moon Festival, Hanukkah, 14th July and other celebrations.

Maths

In Maths, the students are continuing to learn about angles which are an applicable part of mathematical geometry. In Level 3, the students will learn about straight angles such as right angles, obtuse angles and acute angles, straight angles and reflex angles and rotational/ complete angles.  (The students will not be learning about angles in a circle in Level 3). The students learnt about the unit of measurement for an angle which is called a ‘degree’.

Students have recently started to learn about Probability and how Probability Lines are used to measure the likelihood of an event happening. We are learning to make predictions based on a combination of probability and intuition as well as performing trials of a chance experiment and then discussing the results.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the Level 3 students are learning about Celebrations and how different cultures and countries celebrate important events. People recognise important events through celebrations, commemorations and traditions around the world, including whole world celebrations like the Olympics. Students will explore a celebration by researching the history of the event, the country of origin, its importance as a celebration or commemoration, and the cultural characteristics that make it unique to that country or culture.

There will be an Expo for all Level 3 students in Week 9 of Term 3 which will celebrate the students’ learning of important events. They will write their own Power Point Presentation, present a booklet as well as building/ creating/ drawing the actual celebration. Students will also have the opportunity to wear different cultural clothes of significance associated with their chosen celebration.

GEM Chat - In the classroom, we have been discussing Empathy and what that looks like to other people as well as and how they might feel when being empathetic to others.
