Creating Futures Together
Literacy at Wheelers Hill Secondary College
At Wheelers Hill Secondary College, we recognise that understanding vocabulary such as analyse, evaluate, and compare are essential for student success across all subjects in the Victorian Curriculum. These terms and subject related ones help guide students in how to think, respond, and demonstrate deeper understanding of complex concepts. We have implemented an active school-wide program where teachers have been placing emphasis on these words in relevant classes to help students unpack what the selected terms mean, how to identify them in assessments and how to apply them effectively in their written and verbal responses.
Teachers are working closely with students through explicit lessons, examples, and practice activities designed to strengthen their confidence and comprehension. This approach not only enhances academic achievement but also builds essential critical thinking and communication skills.
We encourage parents and carers to continue these conversations at home; by asking students to explain what a question is asking or to reflect on how they approached a task. Together, we can help our students develop the clarity, precision, and confidence needed to excel in their learning.
