Library

The Library has stayed lively right up to the end of the year. Students come in before and after school to study, and at lunchtime, we often have more than 100 students in the library. They spend their time studying, reading, playing chess or board games, or just relaxing. This year, we finished two 1000-piece community jigsaw puzzles, which helped us sharpen our observation skills. Chess sets are in high demand, and Sudoku is a favourite in both the Junior School and Secondary School. We’ve also featured special displays for non-fiction books, Remembrance Day, and now Christmas. The senior fiction section has been reorganised by genre, so now books are grouped by type, like mystery, historical, or adventure. Students have told us it’s much easier to find the books they want, and borrowing has gone up not just in Secondary School, but across the whole school.

We’ve kept adding new books, and it’s great to see them being borrowed so quickly. In Junior School, The Dead Sea Squirrels is a favourite among younger students, and the Minecraft Bible series is also checked out often. Mysteries are a hit in the senior section, and we have a group reading through classic books together.

Studies show that reading fiction is one way to improve language development and vocabulary as well as brain connectivity and function. It also increases empathy toward others. They also show that reading is better at reducing stress than walking and playing video games. So why not spend some holiday time in a book?

I hope you all enjoy the holiday break and find time to read!
