MARRUNG UPDATE

The Little Long Walk & Melbourne Renegades Visit MSS!

Over the past fortnight, MSS students had an exciting visit from The Little Long Walk Organisation and the Melbourne Renegades, who ran a special bat sticker design competition for the upcoming Indigenous Round.

In partnership with The Long Walk, Melbourne Renegades, and Kookaburra, students enjoyed a free, in-school session that combined cultural learning with creative cricket fun. Our regional KESO, Cheryl Cooper, also joined the event, and students were encouraged to bring a friend along.

The Long Walk team delivered an inspiring presentation about First Nations history, the significance of The Long Walk, and the meaning behind the First Nations Round. Students then got creative in a Design Challenge, crafting their own Renegades x Kookaburra bat sticker designs.

Every entry earned students a free ticket to the Melbourne Renegades First Nations Round match and participation in The Long Walk at GMHBA Stadium on Monday 15 December. (Don’t forget to upload your design to claim your tickets!)

Competition Highlights:

  • The winning design will become an official bat sticker, used by a Renegades player during the match.
  • The winner will receive a signed bat from the player.
  • Finalist designs will be displayed on the GMHBA Stadium big screen.

Our visitors commented that MSS was the best school they visited that day — a wonderful reflection of our students being safe, respectful, and responsible.

We’re also pleased to welcome Riley Fischer, Western Metro Community Engagement Officer from VAEAI, who will be joining us for a yarn.

Riley will be available to talk about self-determination in education reforms and what education can look like around Treaty. Parents and carers are encouraged to attend to meet Riley and discuss potential times for a Campfire Conversation, focused on building a culturally safe school system.

Future co-designed modules will include important topics such as Addressing Racism—providing practical guidance to ensure cultural safety and support restorative practices in schools.

If you would like to attend and meet Riley, please let Jamie know.

Wurundjeri Education Planning Visit

MSS recently hosted members from Wurundjeri Education, who met with Brooke, Steph, and Jamie to begin planning protocol and resource documents in preparation for our upcoming 2026 Showcase.

This collaboration will help ensure our work continues to reflect and respect Wurundjeri culture and protocols.
