Sub Junior 2 - Grand Final
Magill School - (34) vs Stradbroke Wallabies (19)
We started the season in Sub Junior 3 and after a few games, then we were regraded upwards to Sub Junior 2. To make it more challenging, our games were also combined with Sub Junior 1 teams.
The girls embraced the challenge and improved their skills through the season:
- Our goalies Maheeba and Isabella, with their footwork and accuracy they went from 70% accuracy at the start of the season to 90% accuracy at the end. They had 95% shooting accuracy in the grand final!
- Our centre court players Vindula, Danielle, Keva and Jasmine with stronger passing, better footwork, intercepting the opponent's ball and feeding the ball to the goalies.
- Our defence Josie, Noen and Lulu intercepting the ball, getting defensive rebounds and being a menace to the opposition's goalies. They got almost all the defensive rebounds in the grand final!
We played Stradbroke Wallabies in the semi-final on 9 September 2023 and lost by a narrow 21:20. We led at the end of third quarter, but failed to retain the lead in the last minute. It was most of the girls' first time playing in a finals game, and there was a lot of nerves showing through.
As we finished in the top 2 in the minor round games, we played in the preliminary final against Comets Orange on 16th September. We won by a convincing 39:24 - this was the team's proudest comeback for the season as we had lost by 16 goals the last time we played Comets Orange (noting we only had the full team of 9 players for half the game).
Having played Stradbroke Wallabies in recent weeks, the girls were now familiar with their game play and were prepared for the grand final. A couple of our girls played in different positions (positions they don't usually or have never played) to best match the opposition's play. The girls played so well and led all through the game.
Every single one of the girls - Maheeba, Isabella, Vindula, Danielle, Keva, Jasmine, Josie, Noen and Lulu - have made themselves and their school proud.
