Being Well at Magill

R U OK? Day

R U OK? Day encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. It is also about building skills of those giving help. People are encouraged to invest more time in developing positive relationships, a trusted network of friends and family, and connections to those who can help before the problem reaches crisis point!

This year we promoted the day at Magill School by chatting to parents in the morning and handing out delicious R U OK? Biscuits.  Morning tea was provided for staff, thanks to Donna Kingston, our Pastoral Care Worker. Meanwhile discussions and activities occurred across classrooms, which highlighted the importance of seeking help when needed.

On the same day, Magill hosted a student leader partnership event of 70 plus student leaders. Nexis (F1) has briefly summarised the day.

Student Leader Partnership Day

On Thursday, Week 8, the Year Six Leaders gathered at the gym with the other school leaders from our partnership: Vale Park, Trinity, Stradbroke, Norwood International and Morialta Secondary schools. The purpose of the day was to analyse this year’s Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) Data. The day started with Conversation Bingo and a snowball fight. For recess we had an incredible R U OK? Day buffet which included cupcakes, fruit and much more!

We then had to knuckle down and start analysing the data. We were asked to name three things that have shown improvements:

  • relationship with an important adult,
  • optimism and
  • cyber bullying

And three areas that need further work:

  • emotional regulation
  • verbal bullying and
  • Wellbeing literacy.

Together, we developed a plan to improve our data to leave as a legacy for next year’s student leaders when they take over.

After lunch there were fun games before it was time to say goodbye. This leader’s day was a lot of fun!
