Main idea: This is using the “who”, “where”,  “when” and “how” to determine what the author is telling the reader.

Find the “main idea” in the paragraph below. Write a sentence that describes what you think the author is telling you.

Mandy was all set for camp, she had packed her bag the night before leaving. She was only supposed to take the necessities. She packed her sleeping bag, pyjamas, a change of clothes, extra shoes and socks and her hair dryer. Mandy’s mum opened her bag in the morning to check that she had everything she needed. She was surprised when she saw the hair dryer.
