Junior School Update

Years 7 - 9

Year 7 Update

Lucy Anderson, Sophie Balfour and Keeley Aglinskas

Our Year 7s have been busy this term! They have continued to grow and develop in their secondary school journey, well and truly settling into our new space. To acknowledge the positive behaviors, we are seeing both in and out of the classrooms, we have brought back our popular snack packs. Students have been able to cash in their positive acknowledgements on Compass for a snack pack each Friday. These have proven to be a big hit amongst our 7s and will continue throughout the year. Moreover, our Year 7 CARE captains have embarked on an exciting initiative by launching a sports club held in the gym every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime. We are excited to watch this grow as the term goes on.

The Year 7 cohort have shown an outstanding amount of enthusiasm in their participation in sport this term representing our college against other local schools. Having already won two pennants in Term 1, they are determined to show their skills and talents in Term 2 sports. At the beginning of the term, Daniel Collins competed in the Victorian State Swimming finals. He placed 3rd in the 50m freestyle, beating his personal best time and 2nd place in the 50m backstroke. An amazing achievement and one we are all incredibly proud of. This past week, 17 of our Year 7 students competed in the District Cross Country Championships. We could not be prouder of their performance and attitudes on the day. 4 of these students will go on to represent Western Port Secondary College at the Regional Cross Country Championships in June. On the 5th of June, our 7s will head out to compete in AFL, netball, and badminton. A couple of weeks later, several of our 7s will partner with the Year 8 students to represent the college in girls AFL and boys netball. Parents and Care Givers are encouraged to head to these 2 events to cheer on our kids. Head to our social media to keep up to date with future dates on the sporting calendar and results!

Year 8 Update

Tiegan Whitby, Jade Kairys and Tim Bunawan

Year 8s have had a busy and exciting start to term 2! We have seen incredible success from our year 8 students in their sports with our girls’ volleyball team competing at the regional finals, congratulations to the girls in this team and their efforts in training across the last few terms. Our year 8s are also busy looking after their very own grass head projects in ICARE, they are learning all about different careers and looked at agriculture and horticulture earlier in the term. We were also very lucky to have Sommerville Police come out and chat with the year 8s about social media and online safety, this was a great session that provided students with lots of strategies to keep themselves and peers safe online.

Future Planning

As our Year 9 students progress through Term 2, they are entering a crucial phase for their future academic and career planning. This term is packed with opportunities designed to guide them through the complexities of career choices and senior school preparations.

Morrisby Careers and Pathways Interviews

A highlight of this term is the Morrisby Careers and Pathways Interviews. These one-on-one sessions provide students with personalised career advice based on their strengths, interests, and academic performance. The Morrisby profile helps identify potential career paths and educational routes, offering valuable insights that can influence subject selections and long-term goals. These interviews are an excellent opportunity for students to gain clarity and confidence in their future decisions.

Introduction to Senior School and Subject Information

In conjunction with the Morrisby interviews, students will also receive an introduction to Senior School. This includes detailed information sessions about subject offerings, prerequisites, and the structure of the senior curriculum. Understanding these components is essential for making informed decisions about subject choices that align with their career aspirations and interests. These sessions aim to demystify the transition to Senior School, ensuring students feel prepared and supported.

Deakin University Visit – 12th June

Adding to the excitement, Year 9 students will visit Deakin University on the 12th of June. This excursion offers a glimpse into university life and the various academic pathways available. It’s an invaluable experience that allows students to explore campus facilities, interact with university staff and students, and understand the diversity of courses offered. This visit is intended to inspire students and help them envision their educational journey beyond high school.
