Pentecost Sunday (19th May 2024)

John 20: 19–23: 'The Spirit will guide the Apostles to all truth.'

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday.

Pentecost Sunday, celebrated 50 days after Easter, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, marking the birth of the Church. This transformative event, described in Acts 2:1-4, turned the Apostles from fearful followers into bold proclaimers of the Gospel, endowed with gifts like wisdom, understanding, and courage to spread Christianity.

In the Gospel of John 20:19-23, Jesus appears to the Apostles after His resurrection, breathes on them, and says, "Receive the Holy Spirit." This passage underscores the promise that the Spirit will guide the Apostles to all truth, preparing them for their mission. This moment prefigures Pentecost, highlighting the Holy Spirit's role in empowering and guiding the Church.

Pope Francis emphasizes the significance of this event: "The Holy Spirit transforms and renews us, creates harmony and unity, and gives us courage and joy for mission." This quote highlights the Spirit’s transformative power, essential for personal renewal and the Church's mission.

In the Catholic tradition, Pentecost is a time to celebrate the Holy Spirit's ongoing presence, inspiring believers to live out their faith actively and fearlessly. It underscores the importance of unity and the global mission of evangelization, fulfilling Jesus' promise in John’s Gospel.

Next Mass at St James

Our next opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate Mass is Wednesday the 29th of May, the Wednesday after the Feast of the Holy Trinity (Trinity Sunday is the 26th of May). The Mass will be at St James' Church (on the school grounds) and all are welcome at 10.30am.

Kinds Regards,
