Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week 2024
This year’s theme is Now More Than Ever. We are encouraged to move forward, connecting with one another and looking forward towards a reconciled future.
This year at St Mary’s we will begin with a Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday 27th of May at 9 am in the Courtyard.
The FIRE Carriers and indigenous students in Yr 5/6 will be representing our school by attending the Sorry Day Service in Shepparton at 10 am.
Assembly will have a prayer focus on Sorry Day and the FIRE Carriers will present about Reconciliation Week.
During the week, classes will participate in various lessons that reflect on the stolen generation, aboriginal culture and the role of key Yorta Yorta leaders in our area.
Reconciliation Week Breakfast
At 8 am we will have a Reconciliation Week breakfast for all of our Indigenous families and the FIRE Carriers. It will be held in the Marian Centre.
Reconciliation Week Reflection Walk
On Friday 31st of May at 11:45 we will gather together at the fire pit near our Dreaming Garden. There will be a smoking ceremony and an Acknowledgement to Country.
The FIRE Carriers will lead us in a Reflection Walk around the school and oval to show our support to a reconciled future. All children are encouraged to wear Yellow, Red or Black clothes on this day. A gold coin donation will go towards The Opening the Doors Foundation, who support many of our students here at St Mary’s.
All parents, families and extended family are welcome to walk with us.
Acknowledgement of Country
At St Mary’s Primary School Mooroopna we Acknowledge the Traditional people of this land. The Yorta Yorta Nation are the Traditional Custodians of this area and we remember their elders, past, present and future. We remember that the Aboriginal people of Australia will always be the traditional owners of the land on which we gather today. We continue to grow through education and reconciliation to a better future for all Australians.
