Numeracy News
Dear Parents,
Thank you to those who joined us for our K-6 Numeracy Information night. It was fantastic to be able to connect with you all and continue to work in partnership to support your child's numeracy development. We will offer a repeat session in the near future. Keep an eye out on compass for further communication regarding the date of the repeat session.
During our evening we looked at the NSW syllabus content points in number from Kindergarten to Year 6. Below is a snapshot of a small section of syllabus content which we discussed. Throughout the year, this content will be explicitly taught to and revisited with your child.
In sharing this content we hope to provide parents with an insight of the content which is taught in each grade throughout the year and ways which you can further support the learning experience your child receives at school.
Your child's teacher will provide a variety of learning experiences which will enable your child to engage in the content and develop their number skills.
At home, you can support your child by making connections to 'numeracy in the real world'.
Some examples of this may be:
K-2:
- Number identification in the every day world (e.g. stating the numeral and the collections)
- Counting collections of objects e.g. lego, toys, kitchen items, food.
- Stating the number before and after numbers seen in the every day world (using the identified number range)
- Counting by 2s (Year 1), Counting by 10s (Year 2)
Years 3-6:
- Reading numbers in every day situations (within the identified number range)
- Comparing and ordering numbers in every day contexts (within the identified number range)
- Counting forwards and backwards Year 3- by 10s and 100s, Year 4-
practising their fluency facts.
Your child's termly parent communication link outlines the units which are taught each term. If you would like further information regarding the specific content which your child is learning please contact info@stpsutherland.catholic.edu.au and we will share further information with you.
Kind regards,
