Homework

At St Bernard’s we believe that homework supports students through:

  • being a positive and engaging experience
  • complementing and reinforcing classroom learning
  • fostering good lifelong learning and study habits
  • providing an opportunity for students to become responsible for their own learning
  • developing self-regulation processes such as goal-setting, self-efficacy, self-reflection and time  management
  • supporting partnerships with parents by connecting families with the learning of their children
  • being balanced with family, recreational and cultural activities

As students progress through their primary school years there is an expectation that they take greater ownership of their time management and learning tasks at home. In Year 3 and 4 they should require less parental involvement and once they reach Year 5 and 6 they should be taking ownership of their learning tasks and completing them independently to meet classroom dates, with at-home learning being required to support in-class learning tasks.

The table below outlines a general overview of homework at each level. Obviously every family has different schedules. Although we have allocated set times for different year levels, it is important to understand that this time will vary for each individual child. Some children will complete their homework very quickly whilst other children may take longer to complete the same task. For this reason it is extremely difficult for teachers to control the amount of time each individual child will take to complete their homework. If at any stage homework is causing tension, arguments or stress please do not persist, however we ask that you inform your child’s classroom teacher the following day to avoid any misunderstandings regarding uncompleted homework.
