MENTAL MATHS  –  IMPROVING OUR MENTAL STRATEGIES AT SFS!

The strategies children have been focusing on this week and for next week are:

YEAR LEVEL                    STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME
Foundation

Partitions of 5

What are the different number combinations we can use to make 5? 4+1. 1+4, 3+2, 2+3

  • Can you record these

Can you use materials at home to represent these partitions of 5.

Year 1

5 plus Facts.

E.g.

5+2=

5+3=

5+4=

5+1=

5+5= and so on

Automatic recall of 5 plus facts helps children when adding mentally.

Year 2

Subtract 10

Choose a number and subtract 10. What is the answer? What do you notice?

E.g. 19-10=

        26-10=

        38-10=

Year 3

Subtracting from a decuple

What is a decuple? In very basic Maths terms a decuple is a group of 10 or the next group of 10/10 more

So when we subtract from a decuple, we are taking away from a group of 10, say 40 or 30 etc.

To practise this ask your child to take away a number between 1-9 from a  decuple.

For example:

90 - 5

80 - 4

120 - 6

50 - 9

Year 4 & 5

Doubling & Halving strategy for Multiplication

Halving is the inverse of doubling.

Students use the doubling and halving strategy in multiplication to solve a problem. For example - To solve 25×16, we could double the 25 to make 50 and then half the 16 to make 8. Suddenly this problem becomes much easier to solve and the number more manageable to work with!

Year 6

Count by decimals by any number

Start at any decimal number e.g. 0.2 and count forwards or backwards.

E.g  - 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and so on

       - 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.1, 1.4 and so on

       - 2.4, 2.2, 2, 1.8, 1.6, 1.4, and so on

LEARNING SPACE 3 SENIORS

In LS3 Seniors we have been exploring the topic of energy and ‘How energy impacts life?’.

We have had a lot of hands-on experiences with many science experiments and then applied this understanding to our Religion concept of ‘Human Dignity’.

Electricity and Light

In science the Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about the need for a complete circuit to allow the flow of electricity. They also investigated how different materials are good conductors of electricity.

In partners, the students worked hands-on to create a circuit. The students then explored how to make a switch, to replicate the switches in our homes. Applying their understanding as to what helps turn the lights off and on. It was amazing to see the students so excited to make the light turn on and off.

By understanding the properties of light, students categorised materials as either transparent, opaque or translucent based on the extent to which light passes through them or is absorbed.

Some comments from the students:

Ashlyn:  I have enjoyed learning about how electricity can conduct through a circuit. It was really fun to do these hands-on experiments with my friends.

Ethan P:   In science I have enjoyed making electrical circuits and making fans turn on.  I also enjoyed making switches to turn the light on and off.

Anik:  In science I have learnt that the wire light and battery are all needed to make a light turn on. I enjoyed that we needed to wire connect to the battery. The wire needs to  for the light to work.

Janice:   In science I learnt about how water magnifies objects when an object is in water. It was really fun because I learnt how water bends the light rays.

Divine:   In science I learnt that different objects let different amounts of light through. If a light lets a lot of light through it is called ‘ transparent’ if it lets a little light through it is Transparents and if not light goes through it is ‘opaque’

Friction

The Year 3 and 4 students have been conducting experiments and critically thinking about the ‘Friction’. Frictional forces are exerted when objects resist the sliding or rolling of another solid object. They also learnt about how different materials like metals are good conductors of heat.

Students enjoyed applying this knowledge to real-world situations by making connections between friction and their fingerprints, tyres on a car and even why during cooking our saucepans retain heat.

Some comments from the students:

Eleeya (Year 3) - I have learnt new things about friction and heat.

Siddharth (Year 3) - I have learnt friction works best on rougher surfaces.

Leon (Year 4) - Did you know- that fingerprints help you grip onto objects and when rubbed together they make your hands hotter?

Isaiah M (Year 4)I have learnt that if you push a metal can on a carpet it will stop moving and if you push it on a smooth surface like a table it will keep moving. This is because of friction.

Senior Maths

Gavin:  The students in Clinic 3 Have been learning about 3D shapes and cross sections. We have been cutting fresh fruit and cucumbers to learn about perpendicular and parallel cross sections. We have also been learning to order and compare decimals on a numberline. We have learnt the LCM method to compare fractions as well. We are very proud of our Learning.

GRADE 5/6 INTER-SCHOOL SPORT

Today our Grade 5/6's played against Coral Park Primary School.  They played extremely well with great sportsmanship in their respective sports.

Some of our students were tired as a result of the Football Gala Day, however that didn't hinder their competitiveness and performance today.

Congratulations to all the Grade 5/6's who participated today.

FOOTBALL GALA DAY - AFL

The Football Gala Day (AFL) occurred on Wednesday 15th of May.  It was played at Livingston Reserve in Cranbourne East.

The first game was played against St Kevin's Primary School.  Our students did extremely well and won against St Kevin's Primary School.  It was played with great sportsmanship and spirit.

Our next game was challenging against Rangebank Primary School.  It was a close game and we won by a point.  The students were exhausted, however extremely happy with the victory which was shown on their faces.

The final game against Grayling Primary School which was an extremely close game, unfortunately we lost by under a goal. Our students should be proud of their performance.

Dominic was thankful for the opportunity to play in the Football Gala Day and enjoyed the experience.

It's important to give your kids an opportunity to play different sports because you never know your child's talent.

AFL PRIMARY PLAY CLINIC

Junior students had a great time at their AFL clinic today. They learnt lots of new skills and eagerly participated in all the activities.

We would like to thank AFL and Jackson, the coach, for this opportunity.  He was an engaging coach and students were actively participating in his sessions.  Laughter could be heard down the hallway as students wholeheartedly loved the experience.

If you are interested in your child participating in NAB AFL Auskick after school, please see the flyer in the Community Section on the newsletter. There is also a free clinic tonight at Marriott Waters Reserve at 5.30 pm in Lyndhurst if anyone is interested. (see flyer below)

GRADE 2 BASKETBALL CLINICS – MELBOURNE UNITED

We are excited to inform you that we have been able to organise a basketball clinic for Grade 2 students on Friday June 3rd. Adam, who is the Community Coach at Melbourne United, will kindly come out to run these clinics.

The students will attend a 40 minute clinic. Please ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform on the day. Reminders will also be placed on Morning Reminders and in the Newsletter. Parents please ensure you acknowledge via Operoo.

We would like to thank Adam and Melbourne United for this opportunity.

WHOLE SCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS

SOCCER FUN DAY

On the last day of term students will be involved in the Soccer Fun Day. Seniors will participate in House soccer matches and Juniors in soccer rotational activities. We will hopefully have our traditional Staff vs Gr 6 soccer match as well.
