Developing a Collaborative Mindset

Maths Problem Solving

You often hear about 21st Century Skills that are required for the jobs of the future.  One such skill, that has been around for an eternity and will always be critical in many roles, is the ability to collaborate and work with others. Developing our students' understanding of collaboration and encouraging them to work with a variety of learning partners is sometimes not an easy task.  Learning to share one’s opinions and ideas, listening and responding to others respectfully and working together to overcome challenges has been a constant focus and theme throughout our Maths Problem Solving sessions.

Recently, our students from Prep, 3 and 5 participated in a trial of some ‘Play is the Way’ games that are aimed at creating experiences that allow the students to develop the aforementioned skills of collaboration.  The games were a lot of fun and it was fantastic to see our students overcome the challenges together and often demonstrate maturity beyond their years. The way our students communicated with each other really improved throughout each session.  The constructive discussions around strategies and constant affirmation and support shown for each other was fantastic.
