Year 1

Hello from 1B

We are having a wonderful Term 2 so far, with lots of fun and learning.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on different ways to solve addition and subtraction problems such as counting on and back, doubles and near doubles, fact families, number lines and friends of ten. We have also been using informal units to measure the length of different items.

In Literacy, we have been using our ‘Show Me Boards’ in our Jolly Classroom sessions. Students have been writing imaginative narratives, focusing on using interesting openers and uplevelling sentences to include adjectives to add details about characters and settings.

We all had a wonderful afternoon celebrating Education Week, where Y 1 students used straw, icy pole sticks and masking tape to build bridges. It was amazing to see all the different ways in which students used the materials to create their structures.

As part of students Inquiry learning on ‘How is the past different from the present?’, grade 1 students were asked to interview a grandparent or older family member and find out what life was like in the past. It was wonderful listening to the students talk about their special person who they chose to interview and share their amazing posters, booklets, and PowerPoint presentations. We are all looking forward to our excursion to Coal Creek to further our learning about the past.
