Support Unit

It has been another busy and memorable term in the Support Unit, with students enjoying a wide range of learning experiences both in the classroom and out in the community.
Students have continued to develop their skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Geography and PDHPE. Students explored topics including Shape and Space, measurement and area, Water in the World, Respectful Relationships, and Conflict and Corruption. In Science, students investigated weird and wonderful animals through hands-on activities and had the exciting opportunity to observe a chrysalis develop into a butterfly before releasing it into the garden. Students have also enjoyed getting active through activities such as volleyball and spending time working in the garden.
Learning has extended beyond the classroom, with SU3 developing their independence through Travel Training. Students have learned to plan journeys and navigate public transport while visiting locations including Circular Quay, Green Square Library, Centennial Park, Coogee Beach and the Domestic Airport. Some students from SU4 and SU5 have also participated in work experience at The Avenue in Botany, completing tasks such as order packing and fulfilment, dog walking and candle making while developing valuable workplace and independence skills.
Our elective classes have also been busy. In Design and Technology, students created rubber band-powered cars, split-pin creations and interactive artworks. CAPA students explored Mystical Creatures in Art and developed their keyboard skills in Music.
In Food Technology, students prepared a variety of desserts while also planting carrots and tomatoes to learn about food production. Languages students explored French food and culture and are looking forward to their end-of-term French breakfast, while Visual Arts students have been creating artworks inspired by their pets. Work and Community students have been developing important community access and independence skills by visiting local services, including the fire station, police station and bank, learning how to confidently access and interact with services in their local community.
Students also proudly represented JJ Cahill at the Inclusive School Sports Bowling Competition, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and encouraging both their teammates and their competitors. It was wonderful to see such fantastic teamwork and school spirit.
Finally, we would like to wish our graduating Year 12 students Will, Taina, Labron, Tasin and Kadir all the very best as they finish their time at JJ Cahill. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and wish them every success and happiness as they begin their next chapter.
