Science 7-10

This term, students from Years 7 to 10 have been fully immersed in the wonders of physics, exploring topics ranging from forces and energy to electricity. Through a range of hands-on activities, they have been bringing complex concepts to life in the classroom. Let’s take a look at the exciting projects each year level has been working on.

Year 7: Forces

Our Year 7 students have been learning all about forces—how they push, pull, and affect the motion of objects. From exploring gravity to friction and magnetism, they’ve been investigating how these forces interact in the world around us.

One of the highlights of their learning was making their very own electromagnets. Using simple materials like wire, batteries, and nails, students were able to create a magnetic field by running electricity through a coiled wire. This project not only demonstrated the connection between electricity and magnetism but also gave students a chance to see how forces can be harnessed to create powerful tools we use every day. The sense of achievement was evident as they tested how many paper clips their electromagnets could lift!

Year 8: Energy

In Year 8, students have been diving deep into energy and energy transformations—understanding how energy changes form, from potential energy to kinetic energy and beyond. They’ve been examining various types of energy, including thermal, chemical, and electrical, and how these forms are transformed in different situations.

To bring their learning to life, Year 8 students constructed creative toy contraptions that showcase energy transformations in action. Whether it was a wind-up toy converting mechanical energy into motion or a catapult demonstrating the transformation of elastic potential energy into kinetic energy, students had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a playful, hands-on way. The toy project has not only been a fun challenge but has also deepened their understanding of how energy works in everyday objects.

Year 9: Organic Chemistry

In Year 9, the focus has been on organic chemistry—its origins, uses, and how we can harness it in practical ways. Students have been learning where organic chemistry comes from, non-renewable sources, and its useful applications.

Year 10: Motion

The students have been investigating the properties and factors that affect motion. Looking deeply at terminal velocity by creating parachutes and dropping them off the first floor of E Block. In addition, performing simple motion calculations involving the motion of cars around the school. Isaac Newton’s laws of motion have been investigated and related to real world problems and solutions. Particularly how they relate in the sporting contexts.

Across all year levels, our students are not just learning the theory behind physics but are actively applying it through experimentation and creative projects. From electromagnets to energy toys and electrical circuits, they are gaining valuable skills and knowledge that will fuel their curiosity for the world around them.

Mathematics 7-10

This term, our students from Year 7 to Year 10 have been diving into a variety of mathematical concepts, from algebra and data analysis to financial mathematics and linear relationships.

Year 7: Algebra, Probability, and Data Collection

Year 7 students have been honing their skills in algebraic techniques, learning how to simplify expressions, solve equations, and apply these techniques to real-life problems. They’ve explored the power of algebra as a tool for solving puzzles and understanding patterns, and their progress in mastering the basics of this fundamental mathematical language. In addition to algebra, Year 7 has also been introduced to probability, where they’ve been investigating how likely certain events are to occur. From flipping coins to rolling dice, students have been calculating probabilities and understanding how chance plays a role in everyday situations. Finally, Year 7 students have been practising data collection methods, learning how to gather, record, and interpret data. Through hands-on surveys and experiments, they’ve been applying statistical techniques to real-world situations.

Year 8: Data Analysis and Rates and Ratios

Year 8 students have been focusing on data analysis, where they’ve learned to make sense of information by organising, summarising, and interpreting data. They’ve been exploring various graphical methods, such as bar charts, histograms, and scatter plots, to visually represent data sets. By analysing trends and patterns, they’re beginning to understand the stories that numbers can tell. The concept of rates and ratios has also been a key focus. Year 8 students have been solving problems involving the comparison of quantities and understanding the practical applications of rates and ratios, from speed and distance to recipes and scaling models. This area of maths has helped students see how mathematics is used in a variety of real-life contexts, building their problem-solving skills.

Year 9: Probability, Data Analysis, and Financial Mathematics

In Year 9, students have been building on their knowledge of probability, extending their understanding of theoretical and experimental probability. They’ve been solving more complex problems, using tree diagrams and probability tables to determine outcomes and make predictions in uncertain situations. Data analysis has also been a major area of focus, with students working on interpreting more sophisticated data sets, using measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and variability (range, interquartile range). Their work has involved real-world applications, analysing data from various fields such as sports, economics, and environmental studies. In financial mathematics, Year 9 students have been learning practical life skills, including calculating interest, understanding loans and investments, and working with budgets. This unit has given them essential knowledge that will be valuable for managing money and making informed financial decisions in the future.

Year 10: Area, Length, Volume, Data Analysis, and Linear Relationships

Year 10 students have been delving into the world of geometry, focusing on area, length, and volume. They’ve been working through problems involving different shapes, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, applying formulas to calculate surface areas and volumes of complex objects. These skills are essential for real-world tasks such as architecture, engineering, and design. In data analysis, Year 10 students have been refining their skills in interpreting and representing data using advanced statistical techniques. They’ve been exploring how to critically assess data, identifying misleading graphs and drawing conclusions based on accurate analysis. Finally, the study of linear relationships has been an important part of the Year 10 curriculum. Students have been learning how to plot and interpret straight-line graphs, solve linear equations, and understand the relationships between variables. This topic lays the groundwork for future studies in algebra and calculus, providing students with the tools to analyse real-life scenarios such as trends in business, science, and technology.

Years 11 & 12 Mathematics and Science

Years 11 and 12 Mathematics and Science Classes

Students have been spending a lot of time preparing for their final assessment tasks - examinations. Wishing all students the best of wishing in their preparation for their examinations.

Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiads

Congratulations to all the HPGE mathematics students who competed in the AMIO. This is the first year they undertook this endeavour. This 4 hour, non-calculator examination pushed all students to their limits. May their results reflect their efforts.
