Level 5

We're excited to share the incredible progress and activities our students have been engaged in recently.

Reading

Book vs. Movie

Our Level 5 students are embarking on a fascinating journey to explore the differences between books and their movie adaptations. Our focus is on understanding how the same story can change when transformed from page to screen.

Students are examining the unique elements that books and movies bring to storytelling. We're discussing how novels use detailed descriptions, inner thoughts, and nuanced language, while movies rely on visual and auditory elements like cinematography, soundtracks, and acting to convey the same story.

Writing

We’ve transitioned from crafting realistic fiction to developing compelling information reports. Our focus is on creating impactful news articles on widely recognised topics. Here’s what students are working on and the key components they are including in their articles:

Choosing a Topic:

Students have the option to choose their topic to create news articles, such as a natural disaster, a famous Person, or a historical event.

Research and Accuracy:

Students conduct thorough research to ensure the credibility of their articles. They gather accurate facts, figures, and details to provide a well-rounded and informative piece.

Structuring the Article:

Students are learning to organise their articles with a clear structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs containing key facts, statistics, supporting evidence, and a conclusion. Where applicable, students incorporate relevant images or media to complement their text. Visuals help engage readers and provide additional context.

Providing feedback:

Students will also participate in peer reviews to give and receive feedback, refining their articles based on constructive suggestions.

Numeracy

We’ve been revisiting the essential concepts of area and perimeter, blending engaging activities and real-world applications.

To kick off our revision, students participated in a lively warm-up activity where they drew their own 2D shapes. This hands-on exercise allowed them to calculate both the area and perimeter of their creations. By visualising and measuring their shapes, students reinforced their understanding of these key concepts practically and interactively.

Following the warm-up, students tackled activities to enhance their real-world skills. They applied their knowledge of area and perimeter to solve problems that mirror everyday situations, such as calculating the area and perimeter of farm paddocks and working out the cost to fence and plant the seeds based on their calculations.

In a creative twist, some students took their maths skills to the next level by using them to solve a fictional murder mystery! They applied their understanding of area and perimeter to analyse clues and piece together information related to the crime scene. This engaging challenge reinforced their mathematical skills and showcased how maths can be applied in problem-solving scenarios.

Inquiry

Students have delved into the diverse characteristics of each continent, gaining insights into their unique geographical features, climates, cultures, and ecosystems. This exploration has broadened their understanding of the world's landscapes and the interconnections between different regions. To make the learning experience dynamic and interactive, students participated in a variety of activities:

  • Creating detailed continent maps highlighting key physical features.
  • Researching and presenting the cultures, traditions, and daily lives of people from various continents.
  • Showcasing their learning through a creative Euro trip project.

We will wrap up the unit with a reflection activity, during which students will share their key takeaways and new insights. They will also complete peer/self-assessments to demonstrate their understanding of the material.

Exploring our planet’s continents has been rewarding, and we’re proud of our students' enthusiasm and curiosity.
