From the Classroom
Rowville / Lysterfield Rotary Club Speech Competition 2024
On Monday 19th August Luke O (6HB) and Charlie B (6W) represented Karoo Primary School at the annual Primary School Public Speaking Competition. Both students had been voted by their peers and teachers after a rigorous in school competition.
The Year 6 program at Karoo is full of many additional opportunities and the Rowville/Lysterfield Rotary Club Speech Competition has become one of the most prestigious activities of the year. All students write a speech as an additional learning opportunity during our Super Speak Program. They can then elect to participate in a wider community event which starts with students performing to the Year 6 cohort. Only two students can present from each local school. This year the standard was particularly high. It was a tough decision; however Luke and Charlie were selected for their speeches on ‘The place that inspires me the most’ and ‘My most embarrassing moment’.
Both students were stand outs for their diction, body language and content. They certainly displayed Personal Excellence! At the end of the competition Luke placed 1st and thus will proudly go on to the next round.
Well done Luke, Charlie and all the Year 6 students who proudly presented.
Charlie's recount
Excitement took over me when l heard l got in! That night l memorized almost every word. On Monday the nerves came on. I really wanted to win! Not just for myself but for the school. I knew that either way last or first l did a good job to be selected. When l saw everybody there the nerves disappeared because there was only about 40 people. I got this l told myself. Luke performed 6th and l was last. My speech was on an embarrassing experience. It came up to my turn. I was hooked up to a microphone ready to go. I did my best and my family and teachers said l did a great job! I felt proud. The winners got announced. I heard Luke’s name and was happy for him because his speech was great. Not knowing where l placed l was proud of myself. I went out there and really enjoyed myself. I was proud to represent Karoo PS and l really loved the experience.

The Rotary speech competition was a huge success for Karoo PS. I am so thankful for everyone who gave me feedback on my speech. The teachers were all very supportive and the presentation night was nerve racking but exciting. I am very proud to represent Karoo and can't wait for the next round.
