As teachers, one of the most common questions families ask us is:
“How can I help my child at home to improve their learning in Maths?”
Home learning plays a vital role in reinforcing classroom instruction and digital tools such as Essential Assessment, empower students to strengthen their skills, build confidence and take ownership of their progress.

Essential Assessment is a curriculum-aligned online learning platform. At St John’s teachers use this to assess student’s learning levels as well as provide personalised and targeted activities that meet individual needs based on their results.
Within Essential Assessment, there are two features called My Numeracy and Sunset Maths that can improve your child’s learning outcomes while learning at home.
My Numeracy provides targeted, curriculum-based practice on concepts identified through the diagnostic test. Students can revisit areas of need at their own pace and gain mastery in each topic. Teachers can also assign specific tasks aligned with classroom instruction, ensuring consistency between school and home.

Sunset Maths is a quick and effective tool that builds number fluency and automatic recall. In just 5–10 minutes a day, students can practice their number facts in a game-like environment that promotes speed, accuracy and confidence. It is particularly effective for mastering multiplication tables and mental strategies for addition and subtraction.
We encourage families to support their child’s learning by setting aside time throughout the week for short sessions of My Numeracy or Sunset Maths. Regular practice helps build confidence and reinforces key mathematical skills. To support your child, celebrate their progress, acknowledge their effort and create a quiet, destruction-free space for learning at home. Most students know how to access Essential assessment independently. However, If you need your child's login details please email your child's classroom teacher and they will be able to send it to you via email.
