Child Safe Standards
- We Care.
At St John's, the safety and wellbeing of every child is at the centre of all we do. As part of our commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment, we will be sharing one of the Victorian Child Safe Standards in each newsletter.
The Child Safe Standards are a set of eleven standards that help schools create a culture where children are safe, respected and empowered, and where their wellbeing is actively protected.
Child Safe Standard 5 focuses on ensuring that children are equipped with knowledge, skills and awareness to help keep themselves and others safe. It also ensures that students are supported to speak up and know who to go to if they feel unsafe.
At St John’s, this standard is reflected in our daily practice and learning programs in the following ways:
We explicitly teach students about personal safety, respectful relationships, and appropriate and inappropriate behaviours in an age-appropriate manner. This includes helping students understand their right to feel safe at all times, and that their voice matters.
Students are regularly encouraged to identify trusted adults within the school community and are taught clear pathways for reporting concerns. This includes knowing how to seek help from teachers, leadership staff, wellbeing staff, and other trusted adults.
Through classroom learning, wellbeing programs, and pastoral care, students develop the confidence to speak up for themselves and others. We promote a culture where listening is valued and where concerns are taken seriously and acted upon.
We also support students to build protective strategies such as recognising unsafe situations, understanding boundaries, and practising help-seeking behaviours. These messages are reinforced consistently across the school so that safety becomes a shared responsibility.
At St John’s, we are committed to ensuring every child feels safe, supported, and empowered to use their voice.
