Propagation Workshop with All Kids Junior Landcare

Last week, Chris and Lennon from All Kids Junior Landcare visited our Year 5/6 students to teach them how to propagate native and indigenous plants. They shared their passion for restoring native habitats and explained how planting indigenous species supports insects, birds and other wildlife and helps to strengthen local ecosystems. They also highlighted the important role young people can play in caring for nature and improving biodiversity.

Chris and Lennon brought along seeds they had collected from their own Golden Billy Buttons (Pycnosorus chrysanthus) and provided students with information sheets for the nine different plant species being sown as part of the workshop. Each student selected a plant species to focus on and completed a record sheet containing information about their chosen plant. Students will continue adding to these records as they observe germination and monitor growth over the coming weeks and months.

The seeds are now being cared for in Madison’s classroom, where students will regularly monitor and record their progress. Once the seedlings are large enough, Chris and Lennon will return to teach students how to pot them into tubes, allowing them to become more established before being planted in our Native Bee Corridor. Excitingly, this project has grown beyond a garden and is now developing into a genuine habitat corridor at Linear Park on Park Street, beside the school.

A huge thank you to Chris and Lennon for sharing their expertise and for creating a wonderful collection of resources that will continue to support our learning in the future. Thank you also to Rowan, Noel and Jenni for volunteering on the day and assisting students as they completed their record sheets and carefully sowed their seeds according to the propagation instructions.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with All Kids Junior Landcare and growing many more indigenous plants as we work towards creating a thriving local environment that is full to the brim with native flora and the fauna.
