Principal's Report

Principal Report

As we move toward the final weeks of Term 2, I continue to feel an immense sense of pride in our students and staff as they showcase their achievements, talents, resilience, and commitment across so many aspects of school life.

This week, our senior students undertaking VCE studies will complete the General Achievement Test (GAT). While the GAT may not be an examination in the traditional sense, it remains an important component of the VCE assessment process and supports quality assurance measures across VCE and scored VCE VET studies. We wish all our students completing the GAT tomorrow the very best and encourage them to approach the day with confidence, knowing that their preparation and effort matter.

Recently, and over the remainder of Term 2, students have and will continue to enthusiastically represent Mortlake P-12 College in a wide range of sporting events. Whether competing at district, division, regional or state level, sport provides valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, perseverance, leadership, resilience, and school pride. We thank staff for the many hours spent organising teams, transporting students, and supporting these important experiences beyond the classroom.

A highlight of our term has undoubtedly been our school production of The Wizard of Oz. School productions are truly a labour of love, involving countless hours of rehearsals, choreography, set construction, costume organisation, lighting, sound, ticketing, administration, supervision, and behind-the-scenes problem solving. Productions of this scale simply do not happen without the extraordinary generosity of staff, families, and volunteers who commit significant personal time to ensure our students experience something truly special.

On the last day of term, Friday 26th June, we will be holding a “Dress Like a Hero” Day. Heroes come in many forms………from emergency service workers, healthcare professionals, community volunteers, sporting heroes, historical figures, family members, and everyday people who demonstrate kindness, courage, perseverance, and service to others. This day provides an opportunity for students to celebrate the people who inspire them while also reflecting on the qualities that make someone a hero. We look forward to seeing the creativity and thoughtfulness students bring to the day.

We are also currently finalising our 2027 Prep and Year 7 enrolments. Families enrolling a child in Prep for 2027 are reminded that enrolment documentation must be completed and returned by Friday 26th June. Enrolment packs are available for collection from the school office. Families with any questions or would like a personalised tour are encouraged to contact the office for support.

Student reports for Semester One will be available to families via Compass on Thursday 25th June. Reports provide an important opportunity to celebrate student growth, recognise achievements, and identify areas for future learning. We encourage families to take the time to discuss their child’s progress and celebrate the effort and learning that has occurred throughout the semester.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of our school community. It is a privilege to witness our students continue to grow, challenge themselves, and embrace the many opportunities available to them. The final weeks of Term 2 promise to be busy, exciting, and full of celebration as we continue showcasing the wonderful achievements of our students and staff.

As we approach the term break, I encourage all students and families to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy time together. Term 2 has been a busy and rewarding semester, and we look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning. A reminder that school will conclude at 2:30pm for all students on Friday 26th June, the last day of term.

Student Mobile Phones Reminder

A reminder to families and students that student mobile phones are not to be used during the school day. In line with our school expectations and the Victorian Government mobile phone policy, phones should remain switched off and securely stored throughout the day.

If a staff member observes a student using or carrying a mobile phone during school hours, the phone will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the school day. We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing this expectation, which helps minimise distractions and supports student engagement, wellbeing, and positive learning environments across our school.

2027 Student Enrolments

It is that time of year when we are beginning to finalise our 2027 Foundation (Prep) and Year 7 enrolments. Early planning is essential in helping us effectively support all students, allocate staffing and resources, determine subject offerings, and create a smooth and positive transition into our College.

2027 enrolment forms must be submitted to the school office no later than Friday 26th June. Enrolment packs can also be collected from the office at any time.

Finalising enrolments by this date is important, as it allows the College to begin planning for the 2027 school year with greater accuracy. This includes preparing staffing structures, class groupings, subject offerings and the learning and wellbeing supports required for our students.

If families know that their child will not be enrolled at Mortlake College in 2027, we would also appreciate being advised of this before the end of Term 2, as this information further supports our planning.

We encourage our current families to share this information with friends, neighbours and members of the wider community who may have children starting Prep or Year 7 in 2027. Your support plays an important role in helping us plan confidently for the future and continue to grow a strong and connected school community.

AEU industrial action and mid-year reports

Due to industrial action that took place earlier this term as part of negotiations for the new Victorian Government Schools Agreement, schools were impacted by a ban on work related to written comments for student reports. As a result, Semester 1 reports at Mortlake P–12 College will not include written comments.

Reports will still provide valuable information about student achievement, including curriculum progression points and work habits.

We value clear communication between home and school and understand the importance of families being informed about their child’s learning progress. Families are welcome to make a time to meet with their child’s teacher at any point throughout the school year.

Families will also have the opportunity to discuss their child’s attitude towards learning and achievement at Parent Teacher Interviews towards the end of Term 3.

Student reports will be available on Compass to all families on Thursday 25th June.

Attitudes to School Survey

Recently, students in Years 4-12 participated in the annual Attitudes to School Survey. This important statewide survey provides students with an opportunity to share their thoughts, experiences, and perspectives about school life, including areas such as learning, wellbeing, connectedness, student voice, relationships, safety, and engagement.

The survey provides valuable feedback that helps us better understand what we are doing well as a school and where there may be opportunities for further improvement. Student voice plays an important role in shaping the future direction of our college, and we value the honest feedback provided by students.

Over the coming months, the college leadership team, staff and School Council will carefully review the survey results alongside other school data to identify strengths, emerging themes, and areas for growth. This information will help inform future planning, wellbeing supports, teaching and learning priorities, and school improvement initiatives to ensure we continue building a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment for all students.

We thank our students for thoughtfully participating in the survey and contributing to the ongoing improvement of Mortlake P-12 College.

Our school team is always here to support our students and families.

Please reach out to us at any time if you have questions or need assistance.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our College community.
