Round the classes

Reception: Katie

Since starting school, the Super Receptions have been busy learning what school is about and learning how to navigate the school buildings and grounds. They have been learning about the school rules and how we can all work together in the classroom. We have also been busy making our classroom beautiful with some stunning artwork. This week we have had swimming lessons where we have been learning lots of new skills in the pool and have been working towards our swimming goals. Next week, we will review these goals to see if we have achieved them. We are looking forward to starting lots more new learning next week.

Year 1: Alex

What a wonderful start to the year in the year 1 class!  We have been busy getting to know each other and creating our classroom routines and expectations. We've been looking at our Zones of Regulations and making sure we understand them and know what tools we can use. The year 1's have also been enjoying their swimming lessons and learning all about safety in the water.

Year 2: Suzie and Leonie

Students are busy practising the routines of year 2 classroom expectations. They are working through strategies of what helps them learn, the tools they need and the concept of being ‘super learners.’ The start to the Swimming week has been great. Students have shown their enjoyment at being in the water through their lovely big smiles. They have set individual goals for what they are aiming to achieve by the end of the week. Goal setting is a focus this term so this will be an ongoing task for all areas of their learning.

Year 2/3: Emma

Welcome back to another wonderful year of learning, collaborating, and sharing in our Year 2/3 class!

At the beginning of the year, I like to focus on building a strong class environment—one that is positive, accepting, enjoyable, and engaging, where students feel confident to thrive. To support this, we have been learning about having a growth mindset and embracing challenges, including being okay with making mistakes as part of deeper learning.

We have also explored our whole-school focus on goal setting, with students writing their own personal goals. Swimming Week provided further opportunities to reflect on additional goals and challenges they would like to achieve.

Our daily gratitude circle has been a wonderful way to strengthen relationships and promote a culture of appreciation within our classroom. Alongside this, students have enjoyed our daily reading sessions and follow-up comprehension activities. Library visits have been a highlight, with students enthusiastically borrowing books and developing a strong love for reading.

In Mathematics, we have been practising how to model, represent, and explain our problem-solving. This approach helps students break down complex problems into manageable steps, making them easier to understand and apply independently.

Our STEM challenge this week was a highlight, with students designing a structure or chair for a soft toy to sit on. Materials were limited, which added an extra challenge and an element of excitement. Students were incredibly proud of their final products, and all succeeded in reaching their goals!

We are looking forward to a fun-filled term of learning and sharing together!

Year 3/4: Stephen and Kelly

We have settled into our new class well, learning routines and organisation. We have come up with an agreed set of class rules, and the plan is to revise these to ensure we’re safe and focused on learning. We have also enjoyed a week of amazing swimming at the Burnside Pool.

Year 4/5: Rachael and Troy

The first two weeks of school have been a wonderful start to the year in the 4/5 class. We’ve had some great discussions about how we can each contribute to making our classroom a safe, happy and vibrant place where everyone feels supported to learn and have fun. A strong focus has been on goal-setting, with students identifying goals they’d like to work towards at school and at home — from learning and sport, to personal aspirations like getting a pet! Alongside this, we’ve explored the idea of the learning pit and talked about how the path to reaching our goals is often not linear but often involves challenge, persistence, set-backs and growth.

The class has loved creating self-portraits that show both their inner and outer worlds, helping us get to know each other better and celebrate what’s important to each student. Swimming has also been a highlight with beautiful conditions and fantastic participation. It’s been a busy, positive and rewarding start to the year — I’m very proud of the way students have begun their Year 4/5 journey.

Year 5/6: Sallie

What a whirlwind the first two weeks have been. We are slowly settling in and getting to know each other more each day. Setting up the our classroom, creating name tags for books and lockers kept us busy and introduced some to different computer skills. We have set some goals and listed some of the things we would like to know more about and put them with our picture (they are displayed on pin boards in the hallway).  We have started our unit of work in Design and Technology (using Lego Spike to code and build) and begun looking at place value in maths.  We have started a new spelling program and are getting the hang of it.  Year 5s have enjoyed swimming (love Burnside pool!) and the Year 6s really excelled at all the water activities at camp. Thanks to Chris Kiessling for bringing his trailer, staying overnight and helping supervise, Tina Vince for driving, staying overnight and helping supervise, Megan for staying overnight and supervising, Seb Geers for driving one way and staying overnight and Emily Brodie Tyrrell for coming up and taking a group of children home. Troy also popped in for a few hours on Tuesday...thanks Troy.  Such a great experience for the students!
