Annual Privacy Reminder for our School Community
Our school collects and uses student and parent personal information for standard school functions or where permitted by law, as stated in the Schools’ Privacy Policy and the Schools’ Privacy Collection Notice.
Our Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Policy [NSC policies] describes how we collect and use photographs, video and recordings of students. The policy also explains when parent consent is required and how it can be provided and withdrawn.
We ask parents to also review the guidance we provide on how we use Microsoft 365/Google Workspace for Education safely at the school and what parents can do to further protect their child’s information.
If after reviewing the guidance, you have any questions or concerns regarding your child using Microsoft 365/Google Workspace for Education, please contact the school. For more information about privacy, refer to: Schools' Privacy Policy: Information for parents
This information is also available in ten community languages: Amharic, Arabic, Dari, Gujarati, Mandarin, Somali, Sudanese, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese.
Student Accident Insurance and Ambulance Cover Arrangements
The Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Purchasing insurance from a commercial provider is highly recommended. Parents and carers who do not have accident insurance or ambulance cover are responsible for covering the cost of medical treatments for injured students, including ambulance attendance or transport.
The College has a duty of care to all students. If in the event a student falls ill, and an ambulance is deemed necessary by NSC staff, one will be called irrespective of the family’s membership status. Ambulance cover can be purchased from Ambulance Victoria: http://www.ambulance.vic.gov.au
It is also important to note that the Department of Education does not insure private property brought to school by students, staff, or visitors, and does not accept responsibility for any loss or damage. This includes items like mobile phones, calculators, sporting equipment, and cars parked on school premises. Personal insurance is also advised to cover important items.
Before and After School Supervision
Student safety at Norwood Secondary College is our highest priority and the safe and appropriate supervision of students is an important element of our duty of care to students. Part of this duty is ensuring parents and students are aware of our student supervision arrangements before and after school.
NSC’s grounds are supervised by school staff from 8.23am until 3.13pm. Outside of these hours, school staff will not be available to supervise students. Before school, staff supervise the front of the College and after school, supervise the front of the school, particularly students accessing the buses on Byron Street.
Students who wish to attend school outside of these hours will be able to access the Student Resource Centre which is open from 8.15am until 4.15pm. Twice a week, Homework Club is supervised from 3.15 until 4.30pm. Additionally, students attending outside of these hours for co-curricular activities, sport, examinations, early morning or after school classes will be supervised by the teachers involved.
Students on school grounds outside these times will not be supervised.
Parents/carers are requested to ensure that students do not attend school outside of these supervised times unless they are attending a pre-arranged supervised activity (i.e. sports practice).
For a copy of our school’s Yard Duty and Supervision Policy please visit https://www.norwood.vic.edu.au/policies/ or contact our General Office. This policy includes NSC’s student supervision arrangements across the school day, including before and after school.
Uniform Matters
At Norwood Secondary College, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment. To support this, we kindly remind our community of the importance of adhering to our school’s uniform policy. This helps create an atmosphere of mutual respect and allows students to focus on their learning.
To ensure our students uphold our school’s values, we would appreciate your assistance in checking the hemline of your child’s uniform. Your support in maintaining these standards helps us to avoid any uncomfortable conversations with students.
We understand that this might be a delicate matter, and we appreciate your cooperation in addressing it. By working together, we can ensure a positive environment for all our staff and students. Thank you for your continued support.
Public Transport: Youth Myki
Public transport is now free for children between 5 and 17 years. To access free travel, all young people need to carry a Youth myki card and tap on and off each time they travel.
Youth myki can be purchased for $5 online via the Transport Victoria website or from a staffed station or the PTV Hub.
Youth myki cards purchased online will be registered to the customer and will expire when they turn 18
Youth myki cards purchased in person from a staffed station or the PTV Hub aren't registered and will expire in 4 years. For a list of staffed stations and their operating hours, visit Transport Victoria.
Children under 18 travelling on ticketed V/Line services require a paper ticket or e-ticket and must present their Youth myki to obtain a $0 ticket. On booked V/line services, the Youth myki card number can be used to access free travel.
Tapping on and off
Tap on/off data is used to plan the level and frequency of public transport services. Students must tap on and off every time they use their myki on public transport, even if they have a Youth myki or myki pass.
