VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING (VET)
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING (VET)

Term 4 marks the end of a series of articles outlining our learning program at Peter Lalor Secondary College. A strong part of this learning framework is the provision of vocational education and training commonly known as VET.

The successful completion of VET in the VCE VM can provide students with:

  • A VCE VM certificate issued by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), and a VET certificate issued by a registered training organisation (RTO)
  • Two statements of results issued by the VCAA giving details of units completed in the VCE VM, and UoCs completed in the VET qualification
  • Pathways into employment and/or further VET qualifications or training
  • Workplace experience gained through structured workplace learning.

The following policies apply to VET credit towards the VCE VM:

  • Students can accrue VCE VM credit achieved through multiple VET qualifications at Certificate II level or above, up to a maximum of 180 nominal hours of completed units of competency (UoCs). This will give students two units towards the VCE VM.
  • Students who complete 180 nominal hours of UoCs in a certificate II or above, then move into another certificate III or above in the same industry will accrue VCE VM credit at Unit 3–4 level for the next 180 nominal hours of completed UoCs.

Students who receive an ‘N’ in a unit of competency will not achieve a full qualification from their VET studies. All students must achieve at least one VET credit from their elective. Receiving an N in any unit will place the student at risk of not meeting the unit requirements for the VCE VM Certificate.

Students undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) allow students to blend their schooling with on-the-job training and vocational study. Students gain credit towards their VCE VM certificate. This is managed by our Career Team and Head Start link

VET Absences

Students undertaking full certificates at PLSC are to notify our VET Coordinator via email at vet@peterlalor.vic.edu.au if they will be absent from their VET course.

Students undertaking the vocational major may at some stage during their career, wish to go to university. Students that have completed the VCE VM can explore a pathway to university. This is what a pathway to university would look like for a vocational student.
