Little Pollinators, Big Impact: Stingless Bees Settle in at Hampshire House

Hampshire House has been abuzz with excitement this week, as we welcomed our new stingless bees to our playgrounds, as part of our commitment to sustainability and protecting these endangered animals from extinction.

We commenced the week with a visit from Miss Melissa Valentina who ran an engaging workshop on bees, where our children from Nursery through to Preschool, learnt about the important role that bees play in our environment. The children discovered that Stingless bees may be small, but their impact is huge!  Unlike honeybees, stingless bees don’t sting, making them perfect little friends for our Toddler and Preschool gardens. These friendly insects are busy pollinators, and the children learnt how they transfer pollen from one plant to another by small hairs on their legs and how they collect nectar and make honey.

This has also created a wonderful opportunity to link into our Reggio Emilia project work on ‘Transformation’ as the children explore life cycle of bees and learn about the specific role played by the Queen Bee, drones, worker bees and bee colonies.

Our sustainability committee highlighted how by welcoming stingless bees into our learning spaces, we are fostering an appreciation for the environment and helping our children develop a sense of responsibility for the world around them. After their Bee workshop the children decided that it would be a good idea to extend our garden and plant a flower garden. Together the children sowed their seeds, potted their plants and took turns watering the garden.

The children have embraced our little bee friends enthusiastically and have committed to making Hampshire House a safe and welcoming space for our buzzing friends, while also giving our children the tools to understand the importance of nature and conservation.

We are thrilled that our new bee friends have joined us at Hampshire House.
