Grade 5
Literacy Update: Exploring War Horse
Our students are making great progress in Literacy as they continue reading War Horse. They are demonstrating a strong understanding of the story, especially the significant role horses played in World War I. Their comprehension skills are shining through discussions and reflections on the novel’s themes.
In addition to deepening their historical and literary understanding, students have been focusing on sentence structures. Through the use of sentence stems, subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, they are crafting more complex and well-structured sentences. We are seeing clear evidence of their grasp of conjunctions throughout their writing, as they effectively connect ideas and enhance their expression. It’s exciting to watch their skills develop and their confidence grow!
Numeracy Update: Exploring Perimeter and Area
Our students have been diving into the concepts of perimeter and area, developing a strong understanding through a variety of engaging activities. They have been using a combination of hands-on resources, such as measuring tools and grids, alongside worded problems to apply their learning in different contexts. This mix of practical exploration and problem-solving is helping them deepen their understanding of how perimeter and area are used in real-life situations. It’s been great to see their confidence grow as they tackle challenges and apply their knowledge in creative ways!
NAPLAN Practice in Full Swing
Our students have been actively preparing for NAPLAN through targeted practice in both Literacy and Numeracy. In Numeracy lessons, we have been focusing on solving worded and picture-based questions, helping students develop strategies to tackle different problem types with confidence.
In Literacy, students have been practicing both narrative and persuasive writing. They have been responding to prompts, crafting well-structured texts that showcase their creativity and persuasive skills. Additionally, we are revising language conventions at the beginning of each Literacy lesson, reinforcing grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules. These focused sessions are equipping students with the skills they need to approach NAPLAN with confidence!
