Grade 2

Hello grade 2 families,

Can you believe we are already halfway through Term 1? The time has flown by but the students have achieved some much already. They have all settled into our routines and we are now seeing some great engagement within the classroom.

In Writing, we have completed our final week of recounts. The students participated in a whole cohort picnic and a teacher swap session that included a rotation of activities between each classroom teacher. From these experiences they were able to write an orientation including the 5Ws (who, when, where, what, why), the events in time order and a conclusion stating their favourite parts. These little experiences have always been something that the students look forward to each week. Next week we will be exploring the genre of procedure writing which is guaranteed to be loads of fun as students will be able to make wonderful crafts and delicious food.

In Maths, the grade 2s began learning addition and subtraction with a focus on the bridging to 10 strategy. Students have been using tens frames and number lines to support their understanding and solve equations.

In our InitaLit program, the Spelling focus for the past 2 weeks has been short and long vowel sounds and how we can determine what the sound is by using the bossy ‘e’ rule. In Storybook lessons, we read The Snail and the Whale and Pete the Sheep and looked at predicting, questioning, word work and story mapping. During these lessons we have also started playing some word games to support our reading. In Comprehension, students explored the features of informative texts. We read about kookaburras and Uluru and practised our fluency ensuring we read quickly, carefully and with expression. In Grammar, the students looked at the pronouns she, he, they, it, I you and we.

In Integrated, we have been exploring history by comparing photographs of the past and the present. Students have identified the differences and discussed why they think things have changed over time. We also focussed on how places are significant to people in different ways and determined whether they were for social, cultural or spiritual reasons.

This week has been jam packed full of exciting events for all the students to enjoy.

On Monday all the grade 2s participated in a rugby tag clinic that focussed on their mobility and ball skills. They were introduced to some exercise drills and basic rugby techniques from holding the ball to scoring a try. They then played some rounds of rugby tag where they had to take the tag off the player before they scored a try.

Students also had the chance to join an incursion called kids roar. This focussed on the importance of everyone having the right to feel safe at all times. Students discussed the early warning signs our bodies give us when we feel scared, nervous or worried. They also used the safety hand to identify 5 adults they can ask for help when they don’t feel safe. Other themes included what a safe and unsafe secret is and the importance of consent.

On Friday, students competed in our school cross country. Although it was very hot, it was a great way to end the week. Well done to everyone for having a go and congratulations to all the winners.
