YEAR 7 ART AND DESIGN + SYSTEMS AND MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY
It has been fantastic to welcome all of our new year seven students to our specialist Art and Technology classes. We have loved seeing the enthusiasm and creativity in the buzzing classes each week. Here are a few snap shots of what has been going on in so far.
YEAR 8 WOODWORK
This term in year 8 Wood, students have designed a Mechanical Toy of their choice following the design process. They have started with the construction of the base and frame for the project using various tools and machines.
ART BOX – TRAIL OF DISCOVERY
In the Art Box students have been busy exploring and experimenting with a range of materials and processes so they can create a ‘Big Dreams’ project using their own selected artform next term. They also had the fantastic opportunity to join our Project Runway students in a World Earth Day wearable art design challenge at the Banyule Nullimbik Tech School (BNTS). They engaged and explored in a hands-on learning experience with emerging technologies such as digital sewing machines, conductive thread with led lighting, digital felting machines, lazer cutting and design thinking processes. This unique and exciting opportunity has built further skill that they can now apply to a variety of projects back at school. Students and teachers alike all agreed that we can't wait to visit BNTS again next term so we can finalise our projects up there.
TECH SAVVY - TRAIL OF DISCOVERY
In Tech Savvy, students have been successfully collaborating to create marble runs. This project work has seen them working creatively to further develop their project management, communication and problem-solving skills. They are now about to begin their work on Stop Motion Animation using split pin characters.
STEM INVENT AND CREATE - TRAIL OF DISCOVERY
During the term, students designed and constructed a bridge using only paper, following a specific project brief.
Additionally, they participated in the Monash Tech School Super Skills Program, exploring the topic of Biomimicry Innovator. Biomimicry applies insights from nature to solve human challenges. In this module, students explored real-world biomimicry practices, gained valuable resources, and applied their knowledge to design and test their own whirlybirds.
YEAR 9/10 ART AND TECHNOLOGY ELECTIVES
As always, the 9/10 electives are a hive of activity at Warrandyte High School. This term our Open Studio Ceramics students have been working through a studio design process to make autobiographical narrative pots based on explorations of the work of contemporary ceramicist Grayson Perry. We can’t wait to see these works after they complete the glazing and firing processes.
Project Runway students have teamed up in small collaborative groups for the toilet paper Wedding Dress Challenge. It has showcased impressive teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity in turning a basic material into something beautiful.
Our jewellery design students have been creating jewellery as a hands-on way to explore key design elements such as colour, shape, texture, and line, allowing them to experiment and apply these principles in a tangible, creative medium.
In Systems and Technology students had the opportunity to assemble a circuit for a USB fan. Following this, they designed an enclosure for the fan while adhering to the given constraints and considerations in the design brief.
YEAR 12 ART CREATIVE PRACTICE - CITY GALLERIES EXCURSION
Our VCE Creative Practice students had an incredible immersive experience visiting world renowned Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama’s retrospective at the NGV International. They were able to experience Kusama’s unique and optimistic worldview featuring her multi-disciplinary practices of painting, sculpture, collage, fashion, film and installation. It was so fantastic to see our students in awe of such an icon’s work with particular favourites being the infinity spaces.
They also had the exciting opportunity to visit Top Arts 2025 and view exceptional work and folios from top students in year 12 in 2024 from across the state. This was an inspiring experience leaving our students feeling energised and motivated for the creative work they are undertaking as part of their own VCE Art Creative Practice journey.
