Year 12 2024

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate the Class of 2024. A number of our students received offers for tertairy courses in a variety of areas. Some of these students have chosen to defer their courses and take a Gap year - working and travelling. 90% of our students who applied for a course through VTAC, received an offer. Courses included: Psychology, Sports Science, Engineering, Commerce, Nursing, Heath Sciences, Architecture, Science, Biomedicine, Law and Criminology. The most popular institutions were RMIT (City campus), Deakin (Burwood) and Swinburne (Hawthorn). However, students are also going to Monash (Clayton), LaTrobe (Bundoora) and ACU. Others from our 2024 VCE cohort are starting or continuing apprenticeships, attending TAFE or working fulltime or in various part time jobs. I look forward to hearing how everyone is progressing in their future careers, studies and travels.

Work Experience - coming up in Term 2

Well done to a number of Year 10's who have already secured some great work experience positions. These include working with a park ranger, conservation, horticulture, hair dressing, primary school, kindergarten, retail, steel construction and carpentry.  Work Experience takes place in the last week of term 2 ie June 30 to July 4th (but other dates can be organised if necessary). Work Experience is a really important part of a student's senior secondary schooling. It's not about money (although it could lead to a part time or casual job). The many benefits include:

  • Skill Development – Provides hands-on experience to learn technical and interpersonal, employability skills like communication skills, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Career Exploration – Helps clarify career interests by experiencing real world job environments and industry expectations.
  • Networking Opportunities – Builds connections with employers, which can lead to future job opportunities.
  • Resume Building – Helps you to stand out amongst the crowd! Employers always want to know about your work experiences.

Feel free to contact me for advice, hints and ideas on securing work experience. Also, students, make sure you use your Explore class time well to develop a resume and work on getting a position.

Careers Excursions

Coming up for Year 10-12, a visit to the VCE and Careers Expo on Friday May 2nd. I'd really like to encourage all students to join us in this fun opportunity to explore future pathways (and take home a showbag of goodies!

We are also planning to take different year levels on university and TAFE visits, just to give students a feel for these environments and to help them to start setting pathway goals and selecting appropriate subjects, starting in term 2.

Year 9+ Morrisby Appraisals

Exciting news, a chance to delve into your strengths and interests, in this annual careers development process. All government school, Year 9 students will undertake the Morrisby careers appraisal. Ours is early in term 2, and students will have the opportunity to discuss their findings with a Morrisby counsellor (parents are also invited to attend this half hour session).

Excitingly for the first time, students in Years 10-12, will have the opportunity to undertake the appraisal, if they missed out during Year 9. Perhaps students were absent or overseas or it was not offered at your school; we will soon publish details on how you can undertake this process and gain lifelong access to the Morrisby portal, which is full of useful Careers and educational information. Watch out for more information on the Compass Newsfeed!

VET VM

Congratulations to our Year 11 cohort, who recently undertook VET Microcredentials in the area of Workplace Health and Safety. Some of our students had done this training as part of their Year 10 VET studies, so now most of the class are qualified to undertake training or work on a construction zone. Well done - Hollie, Billy, Ryan, Angus D, Zak, Seb, Lasenya, Chloe, Ashton, Tom, Elise, Angus S and Taj. More qualifications will accrue throughout the year  all making students more work-ready and employable.

Year 12 VM students are busy exploring self development, work readiness, personal finances and various styles of writing including proposals and planning an excursion to Bounce!
