VCE/VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation:

A Dynamic Start to the Year!

The VCE/VET Sport, Aquatics, and Recreation students have kicked off the year with an exciting mix of theoretical learning and hands-on experiences. Both Unit 1&2 and Unit 3&4 students have been actively engaging in their coursework, developing essential skills in workplace health and safety, first aid, emergency response, and recreation leadership.

Unit 1&2: Workplace Health & Safety, First Aid, and Leadership Development

Unit 1&2 students have been focusing on workplace health and safety, first aid, and responding to emergency situations. Through a variety of practical activities, they have learned to identify and assess risks, participate in emergency response simulations, and begin their first aid training in preparation for their qualification.

A highlight of their leadership development was volunteering as umpires for the Year 8 interschool volleyball competition. This provided invaluable experience in officiating and risk assessment, helping them build confidence in their abilities. This experience will be essential when they undertake their unit on continuously improving officiating skills and knowledge.

The most exciting moment this term was a hands-on experience at Urbnsurf! Students applied their theoretical knowledge of workplace health and safety, first aid, and emergency response in a real-world setting. The day began with hazard identification, analyzing safety signage, and practicing first aid scenarios. Then came the practical challenges—experiencing rips, learning water rescues, and building confidence on boogie boards. After lunch, students took to the waves for a surfing session. For many, it was their first time, but by the end of the day, everyone was catching waves with confidence (and enjoying a few entertaining wipeouts!).

Unit 3&4: Developing Leadership Through Recreation Sessions The Unit 3&4 students have also had a busy start to the year, focusing on developing their skills in delivering recreational sessions. They have gained valuable experience by planning and leading activities for each other, as well as for Year 7 students.

This learning culminated in a major leadership opportunity at the Year 7 camp, where the students took full responsibility for running various activities, including bushwalking, night time activities, canoeing, low ropes courses, raft building, and even managing meal times. Throughout the camp, they applied their knowledge in a real-world setting, guiding and supporting the Year 7 students while refining their own leadership and facilitation skills.

The feedback from camp staff was overwhelmingly positive, with high praise for the professionalism, skill development, and leadership displayed by our VET REC students. They were particularly impressed by how well the Year 7 and VET REC students connected. It was inspiring to see the Year 12 students role-modelling positive behaviour, stepping outside their comfort zones, and encouraging younger students to challenge themselves with new experiences.

Congratulations to all our VCE/VET Sport, Aquatics, and Recreation students on a fantastic start to the year. Your dedication, enthusiasm, and leadership have set the tone for an exciting year ahead!
