Unlocking the secrets of shapes
Ruby Jenkins
Teacher - Mathematics
Our Year 7 students have been having a great time exploring the worlds of mathematics this term!
Working collaboratively with classmates, our newest students have used Maths lessons to explore the properties of different shapes. Students are exploring measurement by discovering shapes and their spatial relationships.
Getting hands-on, students have used geoboards to uncover formulas for the areas of different shapes and blocks to understand how to calculate volume.
A geoboard is a board with pegs or nails in a grid pattern, used to teach and explore mathematical concepts by stretching rubber bands around the pegs to form shapes.
Geoboards help students visualize and manipulate geometric shapes, fostering a deeper understanding of spatial relationships. They allow students to explore concepts like area, perimeter, symmetry and angles in a concrete and engaging way.
Students have also practiced drawing 3D shapes using isometric paper, a type of graph paper designed to aid in drawing three-dimensional (3D) shapes and objects, featuring a grid of angled lines or dots that represent the three axes (length, width, and height).
Now, for our assignment, we’re stepping into the role of architects to design our own houses!
Studies such as these form a strong foundation in the mathematics learning pathway. Classes focus not only on learning the practical maths concepts and skills, but also on learning the language of mathematics. This is vital learning for students going forward in understanding and confidence.
But don’t just take our word for it, here’s what our Year 7s have to say about their experiences this term…
Milena Giuffrida
Year 7
In maths we’ve been learning about area and perimeter of different shapes. Using geoboards we’ve discovered how a triangle is half of a rectangle and then started answering questions about them. Then we learned the formula with the whole class coming up with some interesting examples.

Year 7
We have been learning about nets, corners and sides... and how to draw 3D shapes on isometric paper!
