Stage 2 Geography
Bens Falls
On Wednesday, 17th September, the Stage 2 were all excited as the boarded the bus with Mrs. Adams, Mrs Fletcher, Mr Withers as they set off on the excursion to Ben’s Falls near Emmaville. Mrs Chard joined them and met them on site. The excursion was organised as part of their Geography work looking at the geographical features of the local area including different landforms, native flora, vegetation and animals. The excursion was also linked to their PDH unit - looking at ‘My Kitchen Rules’ - Healthy eating.
During the day students completed workbooks identifying and drawing different natural landforms they could observe. They also interviewed Mrs Alannah Price (Xavier’s mum) on whose property Ben’s Falls is located, about their property and how they use and care for the land, how the natural features have changed. Mrs Price spoke to the students about how the ‘Ben’s Falls Retreat’ developed, the native and introduced animals on the property and about the history of mining in the Emmaville area and the richness of the Emmaville area in terms of minerals and gemstones how there is a possibility of a new mine opening up in the Emmaville area soon.
After exploring the area and working in their workbooks, as part of their PDH work the children had to prepare their own ‘healthy hamburger’ for lunch. We had special helpers - Mr and Mrs Spencer (Isobel Brummell's grandparents) who cooked sausages and hamburgers for the students and prepared the salad vegetables - shredded lettuce, carrot, beetroot, tomato and cheese. The students then put their own hamburger together. Following the delicious lunch the students enjoyed some fresh fruit before re-boarding the bus for the journey back to school.
Thank you to Mrs Adams and Mr Withers for organising the excursion and Mrs Chard and Mrs Fletcher who joined us. Thank you to Mr. Andrew Hancock who drove the bus for us. A special thank you to Mrs Price and the Price family for allowing us to visit this beautiful site and to Mr and Mrs Spencer for cooking and preparing lunch for us.
