RELIGION

 Mr Derryn Ling

Welcome to 2024. Today we celebrated our beginning of school year mass with our whole school. It was great to have our Preps celebrating with us.

Next Wednesday, we will celebrate Ash Wednesday with a mass in the church at 9:00am.

LENT

Lent is the Christian season of Repentance. Lent calls us to renew our faith in Christ. Lent begins 40 days before Easter. 40 days of Lent reminds us of Jesus' fast in the wilderness and the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the desert before entering the Promised Land. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The ashes are traditionally made from the burnt palms of last year's Palm Sunday and worn by Catholics and other Christians on this day. They are a sign of repentance, humility, mortality which is why when ashes are distributed the priest says "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel."

Three practices of Lent are FASTING, PRAYING AND GIVING.

We fast because choosing to go without something reminds us of our dependance on God and Jesus' sacrifice for us and teaches us to live in solidarity with the less fortunate.

A practice for Catholics is to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent as penance and sacrifice and to remember Jesus' death on Good Friday.

Many people give up something for Lent.

We congratulate Suri in Grade 6 on receiving the sacrament of Baptism, Reconciliation and First Eucharist last Sunday.  Welcome to our Catholic family.
