Building an Engaging Learning Community

3/4 Learning Space

Welcome to our first 3/4 newsletter item for 2024!

We have been busy setting up our learning space with our routines and expectations.

Our first week involved revisiting our school's behaviour expectations that are to ‘Be a Learner’, ‘Be Respectful’ and ‘Be Safe’ so that our students feel confident that they know what the expectations are during their school day.

We have also been setting up our classroom routines so that our students know what to expect and are able to understand what is happening in our busy days. In the morning we do our 'Morning Circle' where we gather to say good morning, talk about our values and expectations for the day, let students know what our schedule is for the day, do a positive primer and ask the students what went well during our positive primer. A positive primer helps students to feel energised, happy and in a positive frame of mind so they are ready to learn.

In 3/4 we encourage our students to work with different students so that they can gather ideas from each other and learn about how to work together with students that they might not know well. We do this by having the students complete their clock buddies where they will work with different students throughout the day. This also promotes inclusiveness, we are all learners, sometimes we are the teachers and sometimes we are the students.

We have also been working in small groups where they will need to work as a team to complete a task. Teamwork helps students learn skills such as research and problem solving, but also how to work effectively and cooperatively with their peers.

Our students have their ‘Ready to Learn’ plans that we worked on last week to help identify their individual needs when they need extra support to prepare for their learning. These are tools such as get a drink of water, sit in a quiet space, sit and read or draw for a couple of minutes. These help them to be ready to learn. You may ask your child what  tools they use to be ready to learn.

We have also started our raffle ticket awards in our space. Our class chose the following awards together:

Golden Chair

Line leader for 2 days

Show and Tell

Free shoes for the day

Eat lunch with preps

No jobs for 2 days

7 minutes free time reading or drawing

Free hat for a day

We look forward to an exciting and busy year of learning!

Thanks
