Year 5 & 6
Around our level
On Thursday 15th January the Year 6 Captains participated in a variety of activities, run by Mrs Haysom. They brainstormed what they thought a captain should do and how they could achieve it. The captains also discussed their roles and responsibilities and what else they could do to help others. They participated in team building activities such as trying to keep a balloon between your legs while linking arms with others, guessing who ‘had the hat’ and playing ‘Gaga Ball’. Then it was down to business. The 14 captains had to place the Year 6 students into teams, organise activities for them to participate in, get the equipment, tell them the rules and then run the activities. They did this so successfully and the students had such a wonderful time and really appreciated the work that each captain did. Congratulations captains!
The rest of the year level spent the day working in teams to solve an ‘Island Survival’ task. They used their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to survive being stranded on a desert island. The students had to design a boat and then choose 4 items from a list, in the hopes that they could use them to assist in surviving on the desert island after their boat was struck down by a storm. They were then faced with a range of challenges once stranded on the island and again, had to work with their team to plan how they would overcome this challenge.
While the Year 6 students were participating in the activities run by the captains, the Year 5 students spent the time with their Prep buddies.
We asked the students the following questions: What was the highlight for you for yesterday's Captain's/Leadership Day activities? Is there something you would change, add or take away for next time? Would you like to do it again?
5/6A
I personally really enjoyed it. I think it was a good day to get to know about our captaincy roles and express our ideas for this year. It was also good preparation for future big events because we made our own little activities with different stations for year sixes who weren't captains to have fun.

I enjoyed Captain's Day and how all the captains (School, Vice, JSC and house captains) got to learn and experience for the first time how school captains do things. It was so fun having all the grade sixes get together and play games that we made! Having groups with funny names like 'Pink fluffy Unicorns' and 'Bark' just made it so much better!! The whole day was just awesome getting to know other people and the captains! I hope we can do it again sometime!

The highlight of yesterday was completing the challenges the captains set up. It was very organised and interesting. It was perfect and I wouldn't change anything! I appreciate the time the captains put into the game.
-Maisyn
I liked the Captain's Day because I like to draw and I am happy about the items that me and my group chose but I wish we could pick 5 items and I would've chosen the water filter or the pot!

I loved going on a walk with all the buddies and also coloring ourselves in and getting a zooper dooper. The boat activity was fun because it wasn’t just drawing a boat, there were problems and solutions.
-Cooper H
I enjoyed drawing the boat and playing all the activities after lunch. I also liked drawing the island and choosing 3 items to help survive. I would love to do it all again.
-Kai
I loved the activities because they were fun and I got to do things in my team. I had me, Jack, Cooper and Alice and our team name was ‘The Gang’. I did like doing the boat activity. People were so unique and so creative with their boats and ideas.

Yesterday was amazing. I absolutely loved consulting with the other captains and Mrs Haysom, to organise the after lunch activities. It was amazing because hearing the other ideas and opinions was really cool. The after lunch activities were so good because organising and running it with Sofia was so much fun. I had a great day.

My highlight was when we played Gaga Ball and played a balloon race. In the balloon race we had to put a balloon in between our legs and link arms with our partner and try to run to the other side of the oval. It was so much fun.
-Sadie
My favourite part about yesterday was doing the activities run by the captains.. I would love to do it again because it was so fun. I loved all the activities. I also loved at the end when we did a word unjumble. Thanks captains!
-Ella
I loved the activities the Year 5s and the 6s that aren't captains did. The activity was drawing a boat, then a storm around the boat, then an island, then solving a problem. Hanging out with the preps was fun but my buddy wasn't there. As a suggestion, I would have the activities with more depth.
-Luca R
The highlight yesterday for me was showing my buddies where they are allowed to play and where they aren't. Because having two buddies is a very big responsibility and I don't want them to go into places they aren't allowed in. I also don't want them to get into trouble, I want them to feel safe and happy. If there was one thing that I would take away, probably the running off on me all the time. My buddies are also really good friends with Violet's buddy.
