The Week in Sport

Our Alumni and current Student Athletes have had an amazing week claiming medals and putting in high level performances.  Here is how they went.

Cricket

What an amazing week for MSA Alumni Kieran Elliott who played his first Sheffield Shield match with the Tasmanian Tigers against West Australia.  Kieran claimed the wickets of Test player Cameron Green and Josh Phillippe.  Kieran took 2 for 58 in the first innings then he took 0/41 in the second. He scored 21 and 2 with the bat.  The match ended in a draw.

 

Badminton

Year 11 MSA student-athlete Shrey Dhand, at just 16 years old, finished runner up in the men's singles to the number 1 ranked New Zealander, going down in straight sets 21-16, 21-16. MSA Alumnus Jacob Schueler taking home the bronze.

 

Meanwhile Gronya Somerville won the gold medal in the mixed doubles with her badminton partner Kenneth Choo.

 

Athletics

Bianca Puglisi, in her first representative race for Australia, ran at the World University Cross Country Games in Oman, was the highest finishing Australian in 21st position.  Bianca’s time of 36.26 for the 10,000m race was just over two mins slower than the South African lady who won the event.

 

Our Simplot Games team had a fantastic 3 days of competition and will bring home 2 medals. Year 11 student Thushana Deenathayalan finished 2nd in the girls triple jump with a best jump of around 11.5 meters.  Her jump in the final was longer than her qualifying jump.

 

Year 12 student athlete Raveen Alwis finished 2nd overall in the Men’s Long Jump with a jump of nearly 7 meters in the final. Raveen’s jump in the final was a foot longer than his qualifying measure.

 

Also, congratulations to Lara Sacaner, Sebastian Weickhardt, Ella Leith and our girls 4 x 200m relay team who all finished in the top 7 of their respective competitions.

 

 

Football

Connor Metcalfe come into the game between FC St Pauli and Eintracht Braunschweig in the 65th minute.  FC St Pauli won the game 1-0 and remain on top of the Bundesliga table.

 

Taekwondo

MSA Alumni Reba Stewart has won a bronze medal in the U.S. Open.  While Leon Sejranovic Lucas Sabljak have both won a bronze medal at the Canadian Open.

 

Baseball

 

Congratulations to Roman Coote and Robinson Smith for making the Australian squad that will travel to the USA for a series of games in September and October.  Roman has been selected in the U16 team while Robinson will play in the U18 team.
