From the Principal

31st August, 2023

It has been an eventful week at POPS: a performance by the choir at assembly, Year 5/6 camp, Year 3/4 Hooptime, Year 1/2 excursion to Scienceworks and visits from community workers to the Foundation students.

School Choir Assembly Performance

On Monday the school choir performed 'Brave' by Sara Bareilles at assembly. They did a wonderful job pushing through even with a few technical difficulties. Many of the students in the audience were amazed at how they were able to sing acapella commenting on how brave the choir were to keep on going.

Year 5/6 Camp - Phillip Island

At the time of writing this, the students in Years 5 and 6 are at Phillip Island having a wonderful time. They had their first round of activities when they arrived and visited the penguins at night. They have all had a good night's sleep despite the excitement of being on camp. The weather has been kind and everyone is enjoying the outdoor activities. All students, teachers and parents are well and enjoying the experience of living in a very large family and challenging themselves with different learning experiences!

Year 3/4 Hooptime

Yesterday it was the 3/4's turn to participate in Hooptime. Here are some of the students reflections on the day:

Hooptime was brilliant. I had so much fun. I took a tumble every now and then but I got up with a smile on my face. The opposing team asked if I was OK. Next year, I will definitely do it again. - Mason M

At Hooptime, yesterday, I had lots of fun. As we played more games our team got better and better at teamwork. I can't wait till next year to do it again. - Ava I

I loved Hooptime, it was so fun. Everyone who did it showed a lot of resilience and teamwork. After a game, we all showed good sportsmanship by shaking the other team's hands, whether we won or lost. I would definitely go again. - Juliette D

Hooptime was really fun, all the teams had great sportsmanship. Everyone had so much fun. Everyone had resilience. It was a great way to make new friends. I think everyone will go again next year. - Lacey E

It was great. The experience was amazing. It has made me want to play basketball. Getting to know people was great as well. I am excited for next year. - Xavier Ma

Hooptime is a great way to make friends outside of school and it also introduces us to different sports to try out. It was great fun and I think we should do it in the years to come. - Luca S

Year 1/2 Excursion - Scienceworks

On Wednesday our Year 1's and 2's headed off to Scienceworks with a focus on their History unit, 'Exploring the Past and Present - Toys' and their Science unit, 'Machine Makers'. Students had the opportunity to explore other exhibits throughout Scienceworks as well. Here are some reflections from the Year 1's and 2's:

I liked the mirror maze. I couldn't find my way out. - Eva A

My favourite thing was learning about what foods keep us healthy and strong. - Harry O

We went through the whole city to the other side. It took over an hour. - Josh A

I loved mixing two colours together. We also raced Cathy Freeman and I beat her. - Evie D

Our Community Workers - Foundation

This term the Foundation students have been learning about how our community helpers make life better for people, and how they keep the community healthy. This week they had a visit from firefighters and paramedics and here are some of their reflections:

The flashing lights of the ambulance were bright like the fire truck. - Jeffrey N

It was so much fun using the hose and squirting water on the oval. - Amelia D

The paramedics help a lot of people and are brave. - Evelyn P

All of these experiences would not have happened without the strong support of staff and parents, giving up their time to accompany and support the students in these amazing experiences. We would like to thank everyone involved for helping to give these opportunities to our students.

Fathers and Special Persons breakfast

Thank you to our wonderful Parents' Association for a GREAT morning last Friday. Lots of happy dads, grand-dads and special people were there to enjoy the morning together and this event is just another example of how good it is to be a part of our school community. Events like this do take significant time and organisation. A big shout out to Danni B and the Parents' Association Team for making sure it was such a special and memorable morning.

Student Achievements
